Why do you pray to Mary

We don’t pray to her in the way we pray to God. We worship the Lord. We revere Mary in that we try to emulate her holiness. We have statues and pictures of her around in the same way I have a picture of my deceased Father and Godmother on my wall to remember them and to think about how I should be more like the example they set for me. 

We ask Mary to help us and to pray to God for us. When I was young and starting out, I’d ask people to recommend me to their bosses for a job or to give me a reference for a scholarship. At the Wedding in Cana, Jesus didn’t want to help out the wedding party when they ran out of wine. However his Mom knew he’d do as she wished because she was his mom. We ask in prayers to her not for her to grant our petition, because she can’t, but instead we ask her to ask her Son hoping he won’t tell her no.
