Hill, on execution's eve, unrepentant for abortion doctor's death

STARKE, Fla. - An unrepentant Paul Hill boasted Tuesday on the eve of his execution for the shotgun slaying of an abortion doctor: "I expect a great reward in heaven."

Hill, who also killed an unarmed escort when he murdered a Pensacola abortion doctor in 1994, said his execution will make him a martyr and he hopes it will inspire others to kill abortion doctors.

"More people should act as I have acted," the former preacher said during a media interview at Florida State Prison, where he is scheduled to be put to death by injection at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"I don't feel remorse," said Hill, 49, who smiled throughout the interview.

He refused to acknowledge that killing was wrong and denied that he would be harshly judged by God.

"I expect a great reward in heaven," Hill said. "I am looking forward to glory."

Hill has refused to appeal his sentence, and barring an unlikely last-minute stay he will be put to death for the 1994 murders of Dr. John Britton and his escort, retired air force officer James Barrett.

Abortion-rights groups worry Hill's execution will trigger a backlash by those who share his steadfast belief that violence in defense of unborn children is justified.

Several Florida officials connected to the case have received threatening letters, accompanied by rifle bullets.

Gov. Jeb Bush, who was named in a threatening letter sent to Hill's trial judges, said Tuesday the threats would not keep him from carrying out the law.

"I'm not going to be bullied," Bush said.

Bush also said: "I'm not going to change the deeply held views that I have on (the death penalty) because others have deeply held views that disagree. I totally respect them. And they should respect what the rule of law is here in our state."

Anti-death penalty groups have also pointed to the prospect of violence as a reason to stop this execution in particular.

"We're very concerned that Paul Hill's call for violence may be picked up by any person to whom God speaks," said Abe Bonowitz, the head of Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. "That could be prevented. It should be."

***********************************

So much controversy in one case. His death by lethal injection is less than 24 hours away. The daughter-in-law of the late Dr. John Britton is also asking that the execution be canceled. I think it's only feeding a cycle of violence. He killed the doctors who were going to kill the babies, and now the law's going to kill him. It's only going to breed more homicide. Please pray for the people involved with this case.

I feel very sorry for everyone involved. When you deny that what you did is/was wrong, you deny God's grace and mercy.

Very sad. :(

The culture of death.

Why does the government kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?

And what's really sad is that the lunatic fringe of the pro-life group (who, BTW, really aren't pro-life if they advocate killing abortionists) are going to consider him a martyr to the pro-life cause. Heck, that's how the media portrays pro-lifers anyway -- as crazy extremists! It's just going to harden even more hearts, and because of people like him, fewer people will be reached with the truth that abortion is murder.

I just want to point out the fact that there is a vast difference between killing an innocent child in the womb and killing an abortionist who has murdered thousands of such children. I'm not trying to excuse Hill's actions, because there are better ways of solving problems than killing people. But, let's say, hypothetically, that killing a man was the only possible way to save thousands of innocent children. I do not think it would be wrong, presuming it was the only real option. I just want to hear what you have to say about that.

kdewolf2, let's remember that there is no such thing as a "better" sin. Sin is sin, murder is murder, any way you look at it.
