"The next point for tomorrow is that not many kids do the homework because no one wants to do homework for sunday school.  Even this kid at school agrees with me about no homework in sunday school because it is kinda pointless when all we need to know is that God is our Saviour.  He is every thing that we have needed to be and created every thing."
now, i'm used to defending such things as the Eucharist and Mary's Immaculate Conception from Protestants. but this statement came from a very close friend of mine who goes to my parish. i could really use some suggestions on what to say to him... without having to quote documents, encyclicals, etc, for THAT is the homework he's referring to. he's a real down-to-earth person.. so how can i convince him that we need more than just the knowledge that God is our Savior?

Thy Geekdom Come

Well, for starters, point out that he has to follow God, too, not just believe in him.

Try James 1:22-25, 2:1-16

It's one thing to know the Christ, God made man, is our Savior, but it's another things to believe it will all your heart, that's the first thing. Having knowledge that Christ is our Savior is simple, but sometimes the belief part in Him causes a little trouble. Your friend probably believes this but probably just worded this note kinda funny.

Next on what Micah said is correct. We not only have to believe in God but we also need to follow Him. Again just like knowing that He is our Savior, it's one thing to believe in Him but it's another thing to follow Him. I know many who believe that God is our Savior but yet they don't follow His will or even His commandments. So remember you must believe but you also must follow.

On the type of homework that is required for yall in Sunday school, I see nothing wrong with that type of homework. Especially if it's dealing with Scripture, I hate having to add in a quote from a Church Father on this situation but it's far to important to leave out. "Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ" very powerful saying and so very true. Now on to learning about certain documents and encyclicals of the Church, we are to learn what the Church teaches and be able to understand it. The quote about Scripture could fit in here just with different wording "Ignorance of doctrines is Ignorance of the Church" If you or your friends ever become faced with the challenege to defend your faith what you learn from those encyclicals and documents is what's going to enable you to respond properly.

Christ believed in educating His followers, through parables and sermons, we are able to learn from the long line of followers of Christ and from Christ, Himself. The Church has been filled with many great minds since its very existence; why wouldn't we want to know about them? Just as Christ believed in educating His followers and everyone that wasn't, so does the Church feel that it's necessary to educate Her children.

I hope this helps.

God Bless,
Jen

In one word: Wisdom
My son, from your youth embrace discipline; thus will you find wisdom with graying hair. As though plowing and sowing, draw close to her; then await her bountiful crops. For in cultivating her you will labor but little, and soon you will eat of her fruits. How irksome she is to the unruly! The fool cannot abide her. She will be like a burdensome stone to test him, and he will not delay in casting her aside. For discipline is like her name, she is not accessible to many.  Listen, my son, and heed my advice; refuse not my counsel. Put your feet into her fetters, and your neck under her yoke. Stoop your shoulders and carry her and be not irked at her bonds. With all your soul draw close to her; with all your strength keep her ways. Search her out, discover her; seek her and you will find her. Then when you have her, do not let her go; Thus will you afterward find rest in her, and she will become your joy. Her fetters will be your throne of majesty; her bonds, your purple cord. You will wear her as your robe of glory, bear her as your splendid crown. My son, if you wish, you can be taught; if you apply yourself, you will be shrewd. If you are willing to listen, you will learn; if you give heed, you will be wise. Frequent the company of the elders; whoever is wise, stay close to him. Be eager to hear every godly discourse; let no wise saying escape you. If you see a man of prudence, seek him out; let your feet wear away his doorstep! Reflect on the precepts of the LORD, let his commandments be your constant meditation; Then he will enlighten your mind, and the wisdom you desire he will grant. (Sirach 6:18-37)
I love this passage.

thanks to all 3 of you, those passages help me tremendously.

going back to what you said Jenny.. the main problem that these kids are having with the homework is that we're having to read many Vatican documents and encyclicals, in the original language. our teacher has told us (and has helped a few individually) that there are some authors who have helped write a lot of the documents in Plain English format. would any of you happen to know any of those authors, and sites where those would be accessible?

A lot of them are available in English on the Vatican website, http://www.vatican.va

If not, I just do a Yahoo search or I ask Babelfish to translate http://babelfish.altavista.com

Not Latin but it can translate the ones from Spanish and Italian pretty well if you know your Romance languages (I speak Spanish).

I have looked for but never found an online Latin-English translator.

Not sure if this would help. Try this for latin to english translation. University of Notre Dame?

or this.

do another search cause I found quite a few. Just not sure exactly what you need it to do. If you use Babelfish there is a limit of 150 words.

Peace.

I have found online dictionaries before, but nothing like Babelfish.

And you can just have Babelfish translate the entire webpage. No word limit at all.
