Ordinary Of The Mass

Donna

Recommended Posts

I will post the various parts of the Ordinary of the Mass (St. Andrew Missal, 1962) as am able. This is the English translation of the Latin Mass, also known as "Tridentine".

Where ever appears a +, means the celebrant and congregation make the sign of the Cross. "P" means priest; "R" means response.

There are always servers (altar boys) to make the responses. Sometimes there are "dialogue" Masses where the congregation also make the responses, either unsung (low Mass) or sung (High Mass). Since there are differences in the Ordinary of the Mass whether High or low, the following will be the low Mass Ordinary.

The Mass is divided as follows:

Preparation: Prayers at the foot of the altar, Confiteor (I Confess)

First Part: Before the Sacrifice: Kyrie, Gloria, Epistle, Gospel, Creed

Second Part: The Sacrifice: Offertory, Canon (Consecration)

The Communion: Sharing in the Sacrifice: Lord's Prayer, Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), Holy Communion, Concluding Part, Last Gospel.

PREPARATION

Prayers at the foot of the altar

[The Psalm Judica me is an

expression of desire to go

up to the altar, of joy in doing

so and drawing nigh to God,

leaving all that estranges

or separates from Him].

In the name of the Father + and of

the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

P. ANT. I will go in unto the altar of God.

R. Unto God, who giveth joy to my youth.

P. Ps. 42. Judge me, O God, and distinguish

my cause against an ungodly nation: deliver

me from the unjust and deceitful man.

R. For Thou, O God, art my strength:

why hast Thou cast me from Thee,

and why go I sorrowful while the

enemy afflicteth me?

P. O send out Thy light and Thy truth:

they have led me and brought me unto

Thy holy hill, even unto Thy tabernacles.

R. Then will I go unto the altar of God,

unto God who giveth joy to my youth.

P. I will praise Thee upon the harp, O

God, my God, why art thou cast down,

O my soul? and why art Thou disquieted

within me?

R. Hope thou in God : for yet will I

praise Him, who is the health of my

countenance, and my God.

P. Glory be to the Father, and to

the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

R. As it was in the beginning, is now

and ever shall be, world without

end. Amen.

P. ANT. I will go in unto the altar

of God.

R. Unto God, who giveth joy to my youth.

P. Our help + is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who made heaven and earth.

(Preparation continued)

(The + denotes that celebrant and faithful make the Sign of the Cross.)

First the celebrant, then his assistants,

or server - or the faithful - say

the Confiteor.

P. I confess to almighty God, to

blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed

Michael the archangel, to blessed

John the Baptist, to the holy apostles

Peter and Paul, to all the saints, and to

you, Father, that I have sinned

exceedingly in thought, word, and deed,

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault

(strike the breast three times).

Therefore I pray blessed Mary ever

Virgin, blessed Michael the archangel,

blessed John the Baptist, the holy

apostles Peter and Paul, all the saints,

and you, Father, to pray to the Lord

our God for me.

P. May almighty God have mercy upon you,

forgive you your sins, and bring you to life

everlasting. R. Amen.

P. May the almighty and merciful Lord

grant us pardon + absolution and

remission of our sins. R. Amen.

The celebrant bows down to say the following versicles:

P. Thou wilt turn, O God, and bring

us to life.

R. And Thy people shall rejoice in

Thee.

P. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy.

R. And grant us Thy salvation.

P. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

P. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

The celebrant goes up to the altar.

Let us pray

Take away from us our iniquities,

we implore You, Lord, that with

pure minds we may worthily enter

into the holy of holies. Through

Christ our Lord. Amen.

The celebrant kisses the altar in the middle at the place

where the relics are enclosed.

We implore You, Lord, by the

merits or Your saints, whose relics

are here, and of all the saints, that

You would deign to forgive me all

my sins. Amen.

GRADUAL AND ALLELUIA OR TRACT

See Proper of Mass for the day

MUNDA COR

Cleanse my heart and lips, almighty God,

who cleansed he lips of the prophet

Isaias with a burning coal: through

Your gracious mercy be pleased so to

cleanse me that I may worthily proclaim

Your holy Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord, grant me a blessing. May the Lord

be in my heart and on my lips that I may

worthily and fitly proclaim His Gospel. Amen.

GOSPEL

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

The continuation of the holy Gospel

according to... (St. Matthew, St. Mark,

St. Luke or St. John)

R. Glory be to You, O Lord.

R. Praise be to You, O Christ.

and the celebrant kisses the book, saying:

Through the words of the Gospel

may our sins be blotted out.

CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, and of all

things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-

begotten Son of God. Born of the Father

before all ages. God of God, Light of

Light, true God of true God. Begotten,

not made, being of one substance with

the Father: by whom all things were

made. Who for us men and for our

salvation came down from heaven.

(Here all kneel)

AND WAS INCARNATE BY THE HOLY

SPIRIT OF THE VIRGIN MARY: AND

WAS MADE MAN.

He was crucified also for us: suffered

under Pontius Pilate, and was buried.

And the third day he rose according

to the Scriptures. And He ascended

into heaven: He sitteth at the right

hand of the Father. He shall come

again with glory to judge both the

living and the dead: of whose Kingdom

there shal be no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the

Lord and giver of life: who proceedeth

from the Father and the Son. Who

together with the Father, and the Son

is adored, and glorified: who spoke by

the Prophets.

And in one holy catholic and apostolic

Church. I confess one baptism for the

remission of sins. And I look for the re-

surrection of the dead. And the life + of

the world to come. Amen.

SECOND PART: THE SACRIFICE

1. THE OFFERTORY

Preparation Of The Sacrifice

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON

Let Us Pray

See Proper of Mass for the day

OFFERING OF BREAD AND WINE

R eceive, O holy Father, almighty

and eternal God, this spotless host,

which I, Your unworthy servant,

offer to You, my living and true

God, for my own countless sins,

transgressions and failings; for

all here present and for all faithful

Christians, living and dead, that it

may avail both unto salvation in

everlasting life. Amen.

O God, who in a wonderful manner

created and ennobled human nature

and still more wonderfully renewed

it; grant that, by the mystery of

this water and wine, we may be

made partakers of His divinity who

was pleased to become partaker of

our humanity, Jesus Christ, Your Son

our Lord, who being God, lives and

reigns with You in the unity of the

Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

W e offer You the chalice of salva-

tion, Lord, imploring Your mercy that

it may be as a sweet fragrance before

Your divine majesty for our salvation

and that of the whole world. Amen.

H umble in spirit and penitent in heart,

may we be accepted by You, Lord, and

may our sacrifice be so offered in Your

sight this day that it may be pleasing

to You, Lord God.

C ome almighty Sanctifier and ever

living God, and bless this sacrifice

prepared for the glory of Your holy name.

WASHING OF HANDS

I will wash my hands among the

innocent: and will encompass Thy

altar, O Lord.

That I may hear the voice of Thy

praise, and tell of all Thy wonderous

works.

I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of

Thy house, and the place where Thy

glory dwelleth.

Take not away my soul, O God, with

the wicked, nor my life with men of

blood.

In whose hands are iniquities: their

right hand is filled with gifts.

But as for me, I have walked in my

innocence: redeem me and have

mercy on me.

My foot hath stood in the direct way

['on solid ground']: in the churches I will

bless Thee, O Lord.

Glory be to the Father...

PRAYER TO THE HOLY TRINITY

R eceive, O Holy Trinity, this

oblation which we make to You

in remembrance of the Passion,

Resurrection and Ascension of

our Lord Jesus Christ, and in

honour of blessed Mary ever

Virgin, of blessed John the Batpist,

the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,

of these [the martyrs whose rel-

ics are contained in the altar stone]

and of all the saints; that it may

avail to their honour and our sal-

vation, and that they may be

pleased to intercede for us in

heaven, whose memory we now

keep on earth. Through the same

Christ our Lord. Amen.

ORATE FRATRES

B rethren, pray that my sacrifice

and yours may be acceptable to

God the Father almighty.

R. May the Lord receive the

sacrifice at your hands, to the

praise and glory of His name,

to our own benefit, and to that

of all His holy Church.

SECRET or Prayer over the Offerings

See Proper of Mass for the day

...for ever and ever.

R. Amen.

Oh wait, the one I posted is a reprint of the 1945 Missal. I don't know if it is updated to the 1962 Missal which is what is being posted...
