I don't have to put a needle in my arm or light up a crack pipe to know that route is darkness. You don't have to see morally offensive things just to know that you are up against darkness. The real darkness of these kinds of movies is in making the unnatural seem more natural or normal. That's the slippery slope. The actors in this movie are ones that I really like. Instinctively, I will want to like the characters that they play. Having sympathy or empathy for them allows us to walk the path of rationalizations.

Dairy, I'm not sure what you're up to, but I think this question is profound. I said no, but I'm really not sure. I like to have a very strict confessor (still shopping), where I lived when this movie came out I had one. A very stern Irishmen who said the Old Mass for us and Baptized my youngest child. He told me it could be dangerous, but did not call it sin, even when I begged him to.

I marked yes, but maybe I should have marked "I refuse to..." because we can never know wiether some one's particular action is sinful. Ergo, I do not know the culpability of the person.

I would say with out a doubt is a grave evil to watch it. Curiosity can itself be sinful.

At the theatrical price admission of $9.50, yes.[/quote]

LOL

Seriously, though...

There is nothing wrong with empathising with sinners. In fact, it's good, because it reminds us that we are ALL sinners.

The golden rule with this is "Hate the sin, love the sinner." If Brokeback helps you love the sinner, great. Just make sure it doesn't stop you hating the sin.

all i'm saying is that if you really thought it necessary to make two polls about the exact same thing, you could have at least had one of your alternate screennames start the other one. ;)

Ash Wednesday

Naturally such a situation shouldn't be regarded lightly, but regarding whether or not it would be objectively be called a sin, wouldn't that depend on the situation, and intent of the viewer?

What I'd like to know is how many phatmassers have seen it. (I haven't.)

I would think it is more of a near occasion of sin.

how would it be just a near occasion to sin? if you know what it's about etc and aren't doing for objective purpose, you have no good reason. you are just watching cause you're curious for one, and you are supporting them. how wouldn't that be a sin?

You aren't supporting them if you aren't paying for it - such as borrowing the DVD or watching it at someone else's house. As that information wasn't determined, I cannot state that one was complicit with evil.

I also did not know the reasoning behind why one would watch it. Therefore, I can at best declare a near occasion based on limited information.
