$700 Billion Dollars

See...I get that this is a crisis.

But what about other emergencies that, with only a small portion of the money currently on the table, may possible be averted?

In other words, the economy gets scary and suddenly $700 BILLION is on the table. But what if only (!) $1 measly billion were thrown into the right areas of cancer research? Heart disease? Mental health? I mean...how come the millions of people that have died from disease did not constitute a "crisis" as great as the current economic situation?

Does everyone here honestly realize just how big - how astronomically HUGE - $700 BILLION dollars is?!! Nasa's whole budget - you know, to send rockets to Mars and build space-age robots and the like - is only around $17 billion. Do some digging on the net for other comparisons.

imagine throwing 700 billion at alternative energy.

we'd be off foreign oil real quick then.

What would be really funny is if the stock market settled before the bail out gets voted in and signed. I'd rather they bailed out all the mom and pop businesses that Walmart out-competed than banks run by millionaires who didn't learn the basics of handling money at Harvard or Wharton.

I ditto putting that money into alternative energy. Put Americans to work building wind mills and solar panels, instead of selling stocks or delivering pizzas.

Scary thought, the government owning banks...[/quote]

well the thing is: printing up that money for ANY cause, including this financial crisis, is a BAAAD idea for the stability of the economy. of course, if you admit the premise that we can (constitutionally) and/or should do something like this, then of course there are far more worthy causes that could be considered a "crisis"

Or how about them throwing some of that cash into DC public schools which are so poorly funded by the government that for the past few years the kids sit in freezing cold rooms during the winter becuase the heating systems don't work properly? Or any number of other ways that money could be spent on American schools. It just makes me shudder at the things that the government deems to be important for sinking kajillions of taxpayer dollars into, such as the trillions sunk into Iraq (and for what, pray tell?) and to bail out a bunch of greedy losers who abused the American housing market while the politicans--Dems and Repubs alike--stood by and took campaign donations from these same greedy losers and let it happen.
