But I really don't want to move any closer than we already have towards socialism-- no matter who gets credit or blame. I don't want to raise my kids under an administration that would create more chaos than the Carter administration... Do you?
Let me be perfectly honest.

Your child is not going to live as nice a life as you did no matter who is elected President.

Based on historical trends we can be reasonably sure that national and transnational terrorism is going to increase and increase dramatically. Generally speaking whenever a hegemonic power is declining, as the US is beginning to now, terrorism will increase. Current climate models predict that global climate change (set aside for a moment who is causing it) will lead to greater famine, which will result in more "water wars" and regional climates in the areas where climate change will be making the most pronounced negative impact (sadly these are the very areas that are already in precarious situations). As American dominance decreases other powers will arise, you see this now with China and India. Iran is becoming a co-dominate power with Israel in the Middle East. None of these factors point to a more stable world. The environmental future of the world is dismal. There is a great deal of inertia involved with climate change and we do not know exactly when we will reach an environmental "tipping point" but most scientists believe we are close to one. America's diminished ability to set global agendas due to its hegemonic decline and the rise of other major powers in the process of industrialization makes the prospect of managing to seriously curb CO2 output unlikely and the likelihood passing a "tipping point" very likely.

My point is that the extent to which the government nationalizes industry or does not will not contribute that much to how much chaos you child will live with in his lifetime. I'd guess I'm about 10-15 years older than your child (based on your avatar) so I do not like to say this as we will be sharing the same world.

I think that Obama will do less damage than McCain. It really doesn’t matter that much though. Unless there is a radical paradigm switch in the country your son and I (sadly more your son than I) will not be living in nearly so nice a world as you have. I remember someone once saying "I can’t understand anyone who has a child under five not being an environmentalist" I find that odd as well.

I suppose what I am getting at is that I really wish your generation had spent more time thinking about the world you all would be leaving us than tax rates.

So vote for McCain, I don't care, neither Obama nor McCain seem particularly good. I do beg you to reconsider your present political beliefs. Based on your posts it seems like your political beliefs are quite likely to leave your child in a rather dismal world to live in, and your grandchildren don’t stand a chance. No it's not going to be "madmax" but it's not going to be pretty. I'm going to be 20 in a few months and it's really no fun realizing that, environmentally and economically, my best years are probably behind me. I mean personally my future seems alright. I make almost perfect grades and have academic abilities in several areas very much in demand so I will likely be able to get by. For millions of people in the developing world the situation is much more dim. I hope your child does alright, I am not sure either of us will want to bring children of our own into the world (unfortunately). My father is also very conservative like you seem to be. And sometimes I really worry for him, like will he have to realize in his golden years what sort of world he has left his children. I share than same concern for you.

You can dodge the issue all you want. You brought up your child's future in relation to political choices. Your generation, and all American generations since about the 60's have fundamentally failed my generation and your child's generation. You brought up a possible chaotic world for your child to live in, I am telling you that nationalization of industry will not be the greatest force of chaos in your child's future.

My generation is even worse in many respects; however we are only now becoming a force in the American political system. I am sure you child will be able to point to numerous failings of my age range. And I am sorry that my age group will likely also fail your child.

You can scoff at the warning all you want, I hope you will be able to fine some peace when you realize in your final years just what sort of world your child will have to raise his children in.

I actually bought an Obama-Nation shirt so I can wear it to both Pro and Anti Obama rallys.

Talk about saving $10 on another t-shirt!

Hey, sunshine. You need to sound angrier and say things like "I despise your political views" a bit more often. It's endearing.

I'm not angry. I don't see how anything in my posts came off as angry. I am sad. I feel bad for my generation and her child who will have to live through the world you all left, and for her, you, and my parents who must go through their golden years knowing how profoundly they failed their children.

It's not without hope. There is a slim chance America and the world will be able to turn things around, it just seems like a remote possability.

Ok. Maybe I'm either incredibly optimistic or naive; lol. :)
I think the future looks sweet.

Well I'm glad for you: )

I think that science and history support my pessimism

The worst thing about this story about McCain pulling out of McCain is that Palin seems to have had her useful moment as far as McCain is concerned. McCain got his headlines, and now that the VP debate has passed... she's out of the loop. She didn't even know that her own campaign had pulled out of Michigan!

And neither did Michigan. The Republican Party here is furious! The greatest quote from one of the Republican leaders here: “I feel like I woke up this morning, and there was a note on my pillow.”
