Can Catholics Back Pro-choice Obama?

I think all Phatmassers should read this article, especially any "Catholic pro-lifers" who might think it's okay to support Barack Obama.
Weigel does a pretty good job of addressing the usual "Catholic" "social justice" arguments for supporting Obama, and demolishing them.

Thank God this got published in Newsweek, where people beyond the "conservative Catholic" "choir" will read it.

Should abortion be the litmus test for political support?

Good Article. I was getting sick and tired of some friends I know who were criticizing the pro-Obama pro-lifers just because they supported a no no candidate, without coming out and logically giving reasons as to how Obama is THE single most greatest enemy to the pro-life movement right now. Weigel does a good job.

This is the most frightening part, and I've never heard it displayed so accurately and convincingly:
Moreover, the Freedom of Choice Act Obama has pledged to sign forbids publicly supported programs helping pregnant women from "discriminating" against abortion. Thus a federal Pregnant Women Support Act—a key plank in the platform of pro-life congressional Democrats—would, in Orwellian fashion, be legally bound by FOCA to include support for abortion.
We've all heard that FOCA will overturn all abortion restrictions so far enacted, but I believe the scariest result will be this "discrimination" that will be called out when any remotely pro-life bill goes through the system.

No, we can't. And we won't.

Sadly, his message about there being no "groups" in America excludes an entire class of citizens, i.e., the innocent unborn Americans who are our nation's future. He says that one voice can change a state, and one voice can change a nation, but none of that follows if you kill the person whose voice it is by murdering them in the womb.

That's nothing. Do you want to see something scary, really scary?

George's article was very good, especially addressing the social issues argument. Here is an article, "Obama's Abortion Extremism," that addresses the "pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion" argument and gives a chilling view into what an Obama administration would do for the pro-life movement. (Some of it George already mentioned.) About the third of the way, he begins the list of things that will happen, and it just gets worse as he goes along.

Anyone who doesn't vote for McCain because he "isn't pro-life" helps Obama win and does great harm to the pro-life movement. On the issue of life, the contrast is stark between the candidates.

I should give passer-bys a taste of the article.
Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion candidate ever to seek the office of President of the United States. He is the most extreme pro-abortion member of the United States Senate. Indeed, he is the most extreme pro-abortion legislator ever to serve in either house of the United States Congress.

Yet there are Catholics and Evangelicals-even self-identified pro-life Catholics and Evangelicals - who aggressively promote Obama's candidacy and even declare him the preferred candidate from the pro-life point of view.

What is going on here?
