Very good concession speech by John McCain as he exits in a very respectable manner. I especially like the last 25 seconds of his speech.

He's a good man deep down

A very gracious, humble, moving speech. For a second or two there, we got a glimpse of the *REAL* John McCain, before all of his virtues (i.e.- a "straight talker," a "maverick") became fodder for late-night comedians. He's a good man. I wish his campaign reflected this truth, instead fashioning him as a neo-con hawk or an old crotchedy man.

McCain was informed the day before the election by Karl Rove that figures showed that there was no way he could win. He knew it was coming ;)

At one point, CNN's John King went to that magic map of theirs and gave McCain all of the states he could possibly win, and he still only got 266 electoral votes. Of those states they projected he could win, he ended up losing 2 (Indiana and New Mexico).

He's a better man than a lot of his base. The republicans have, no offense, become so insular and exclusive that many people don't feel welcome. the, as one great republican once said, "agents of intolerance" have scared away Muslims, Latinos, homosexuals, non-religious persons, etc. In 2006 we saw the demonization of Mexicans, those parasites comeing here to leech off the hard work of "real Americans" and the republicans lost the latino vote. Same thing with Muslims. I had a friend of mine whos Muslim tell me she always liked the moral aspects of the republican party, abortion, sex before marriage, etc. But after this campaign, "forget it, I'm done with them forever". The republicans turned to scare mongering, fear, ignorance, and bigotry. They sought short term gains through these tactics but have crippled their party for the long term.

If there were more republicans like you I think the republican party could be viable, but for now your party can only spit in the face of groups for so long before they take a hint and leave.

Again, I really hope that the Republicans take this as an opportunity to revitalize itself.

But it won't do that with Sara Palins at the helm.
