At first I was pleasantly surprised to be reading that our President was excited about Blessed Damien de Veuster being canonized.

Then I read the line that said:

"In our own time as millions around the world suffer from disease, especially the pandemic of HIV/AIDS, we should draw on the example of Fr. Damien's resolve in answering the urgent call to heal and care for the sick."

...And I couldn't help but wonder if this was a subtle undercut against the Church's consistent stand against contraceptive practices in Africa. Obama could have cited swine flu or anything but he specifically cited a disease for which the Catholic Church has received nothing but vitriol from Modernity and especially the progressive left.

Maybe I'm just too senstive and am reading something into nothing...What do you guys think?

He's probably just touting his socialized healthcare agenda.

I think he's advocating we bomb the Vatican.

I think you're too sensitive and need to realize that the Church is not the center of everyone's world. Not everything is some subtle attack against the Church.

The swine flu is not an incurable, almost always fatal disease which afflicts tens of millions.

Note this in the record books, pham: I agree with this comment. ;) (:blowkiss: to hassan :P) Not everything that comes out of Obama's mouth has to be veiled propaganda.

Propaganda, yes. Veiled, not always.

From the title, I thought you meant he was looking to be canonized next.

I agree both with Verdicus and T-Bone. Obama's one hope right now is forcing this healthcare plan down everyone's throats. I don't think this is so much an intended slur on the vatican as it is using the vatican for his own advantage. Remember, he's a politician; there are always two sides to anything he says.

Saints related to fighting diseases are very often invoked in reference to AIDS, it's nothing new or special for Obama to reference AIDS with such a saint; I've seen St. Aloysius Gonzaga referenced in the same way. it's a good thing; so long as he didn't mention condoms/contraceptives, his reference need not be viewed as malicious.

When I read your title, "Obama Weighs In On Canonization" I thought it was along the lines of a series of jokes running out there about his "Peace Prize."

I know for a fact that he's already been awarded an Oscar, and will get his name put on the Stanley Cup.

I think that I... will have to agree with Hassan. Aids is most like the leprosy of our today. Swine flu is pretty much nothing like it. People aren't exiled or face an imminent death sentence when they are dealing with swine flu. Millions of people aren't left in poverty because of it. I really don't think it was an underhanded blow to the Church.

After all... he and Pope Benedict are on the same page about abortion...
