From wikipedia:
Young Earth creationism (YEC) is a form of creationism holding that the Heavens, Earth, and life on Earth were created by direct acts of God during a short period, sometime between ca 5,700[sup][1][/sup] and 10,000 years ago. Its adherents are those Christians and Jews[sup][2][/sup] who believe that God created the Earth in six 24-hour days, taking the Hebrew text of Genesis as a literal account.[sup][3][/sup][sup][4][/sup]Some adherents believe that existing evidence in the natural worldtoday supports a strict interpretation of scriptural creation ashistorical fact. Those adherents believe that the scientific evidencesupporting evolution, geological uniformitarianism, or other theories which are at odds with a literal interpretation of the Genesis creation account, are either flawed or misinterpreted.[sup][5][/sup]

Has anyone here ever encountered someone who believes in this? Does anyone here believe in this? I'm not trying to argue it or anything. I just had my first encounter with a YEC in my online biology class of all places.

There's a whole debate thread on it, in fact.

Chestertonian

The scariest thing about YEC is that a lot of people I've encountered over the years believe you have to buy into YEC to be a Christian.

Yeah, my first impression was something along the lines of:this guy is batsh** crazy.

I should clarify...it was not just his belief in YEC that gave me that impression. He was downright rude and argumentative with our professor, who I might add was much more polite with him than I would have been. He flat out refused to do an assignment on sexual selection and demanded to get credit for it anyways. He started emailing the other students in the class asking us to support him if he made discrimination claim to the school. That email was the first time I had any direct interaction with him and that was what made me think the above.

baptists and new-evangelicals are typically young earth creationists. There are also many Catholics who believe in a young earth.

True. And having been a formal young earth creationist I can say without a doubt that most baptists are 'scared into' believing in it even though science does not support it (nor does it support Darwinian evolution as I said on another thread). YEC was probably the last doctrine that I let go of in my conversion to Catholicism because of the strong propaganda.

Yeah, I'd pretty much agree with that, at least to some extent. I'm sure you can imagine the arguments with me studying archaeology, and some saying that studying science, especially a science that uses carbon dating, would cause me to lose my faith. Though I suppose in the eyes of some of them I did lose my faith through converting.

I used to before I became a Catholic ... I think it's what really helped me decided to major in Geology when I was in school. A lot of people in my classes were all "how can you be studying Geology and be .... Catholic?"

I find it disappointing how many agnostics and atheists assume that all Christians must be YECs. I mean I talked to an acquaintance a while ago who had no idea that there are even other theistic views out there.

Very interesting. Meaningless without knowing their empirical data thought, and their methods of course.
