I was looking for the blue habited Carmelites (wondered if they were externs) and found this lovely video of Carmelites in Peru. At around 7.45 it is so sweet to see them greet the Archbishop in their monastery, and it is nice to see them receive the host as well (intinction on their knees). I wish I were young and spoke Spanish!

Here's another photo of a 'blue' Carmelite working alongside a brown one! :>p They are from St Joseph's Monastery in Peru (different than the ones in the video I think because there are no blue ones in the video)

I think someone who speaks Spanish might be able to google these ones and see why they wear blue as well as brown?

The Nazarene Discalced Carmelites in Lima, Peru wear a purple habit, It's more of a blue/violet.
I'm thinking the blue habited sisters in the previous pics are a part of this community.

As far as I can tell the purple habits has to do do with the devotion to the 'Lord of Miracles', which is a painting of Christ in Lima. The sisters are the guardians of the mural.

Max - they are lovely but they aren't the same as the one in the pic above - they have a different tocque - notice the white 'fingers' extending from under the scapular on the one from St Joseph's but not on the one from the Nazarenas. I am very curious as to why the ones from St Joseph have two different colours, unless another community was visiting them - but then they probably wouldn't be doing the altar breads with them. I find it fascinating.

Maybe you could find something more on the St Joseph's nuns??

The sisters on the pic I posted are Nazarene Carmelites, so that explains their habits, as for the ones you posted your guess is as good as mine. I can't find anything substantial about their monastery. I can't find them listed on the Peruvian Ocarm or OCD sites.

By "pic I posted" I mean the slide show on post #66.

I could be completely wrong, but given the variation in habits, the seating layout and there also being friars in some, I wonder if some of the pictures were taken at an Association meeting?

That photo, yes, but I was referring to the one where the two nuns are making altar breads together and one is in brown and the other in blue, but apart from that, their habits look identical. That's why I wondered if some were extern but they wouldn't be making altar breads anyway, so it is a puzzle and a mystery to me. There aren't any lay sisters any more or I would have guessed that. The other explanation of course is that the blue one is visiting the brown community! lol

Max posted some blue nuns but their tocques don't have the 'white fingers' sticking out from under the scapular. I am very curious but like Max, couldn't find anything else posted about them. That particular community doesn't appear on the OCD website!

You could always write to them and ask, lol

That gives the appearance of sounding emminently sensible, but as my Spanish is limited to 'A que hora empieza la pelicula?' and other such useful phrases, I doubt that they would understand me!

It will stay a mystery!:like:

The way externs are varies dramatically from comunity to community though (but I not saying I think they are or not here). In some they live just like any other sister but are the ones who go shopping etc when needed, in others they are outside almost all the time, and then some sit in the middle. Notting Hill's extern has a room outside enclosure plus a cell inside, she goes into choir for the Office as far as her work allows but eats on her own mostly, etc. At St Cecilia's their extern is outside almost all the time, which I find interesting especially as they ae constitutional enclosure not papal and we see the sisters out and about quite often.

I think I am one of few people who wishes I had lived in the days of lay sisters, I have always felt I would have probably been lay rather than choir if I had.
