The heat is the reason why the Pink Sisters transferred their convent to Baguio from Lipa.  Several German Nuns died because Lipa is humid.

I could see that happening.  I don't think I've experienced that kind of humidity, must be bad.

The Pink Sisters was counseled to adopt their clothing to the missions and must loosen a bit the headdress.  One cannot survive with thick woolen habit here in the Philippines, hence, missionaries had to adjust the clothing and choose light materials.

The Foundresses for Taiwan Carmels travelled and visited to different Carmels in Asia; Mother Prioress and the community of Hong Kong Carmel was horrified to see the American and Taiwanese Nuns still wearing the woolen habit and petticoats.  Hong Kong Carmelite Nuns immediately produced 7 pairs of their best habit and had them change into them.  The nuns will not survive in the missions if they do not dress according to the climate.

How interesting, I just can't imagine that kind of heat and I am in the Midwest.

The heat in tropical countries is really a challenged to the foreign missionaries - cloistered and active alike!

But our Nuns and Monks knows how to adopt.

Praised be Jesus Christ! A friend of mine visited the Shen Keng (Taipei) Carmel a few years ago, which is where this video from a Solemn Profession is from (she showed me her pictures, although they're all offline now)

Both of the Taiwanese Carmels are under the hybrid Constitutions, as you called them Gracian, 1990 except under the Father General. I know we were already emailing about this, but I thought I'd share here. I remember you were saying you were in contact with Chiung Lin (which founded Shen Keng) which was founded from Santa Clara, CA (French customs) She really radiates the joy of her Spouse!

Hi Chiqui!

Hybrid Text is the term used in the Thesis of Sr. Kate Kuentsler.  As we have discussed through email, this type of text is the entire 1990 Text but the Nuns asked permission from Rome to follow the 1991 Text as far as the Father General is concerned.  There are very Carmels following this texts and in the USA, Georgetown one of which.

I have been in contact with the Mother Prioress of Chiung Lin Carmel few years ago and she was so helpful.  This Carmel is very conservative but they are under the Generalate.

These Carmelites speak Portugese, but their founder, Fr. Tiago, speaks English as well.  They are making a foundation in the US in the near future.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jDuISiFwNRg They are not Ocd, or O.Carm but E.Carm as they are hermits and use the EF of the mass exclusively with the ancient Carmelite Rite of the Divine Office.

These Carmelites follow the rule of Blessed Francisco Palau, OCD.  There are other threads about them on here somewhere, but I thought this was a good thread to put them on.

Praised be Jesus Christ! :)

Just a reminder that the 9 Day Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel started yesterday. Here are the prayers for the novena:

First Day

O Beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, holy and singular, who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a pure virgin, assist us in our necessity! O Star of the Sea, help and protect us! Show us that you are our Mother!
(pause and mention petitions)

Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Second Day

Most Holy Mary, Our Mother, in your great love for us you gave us the Holy Scapular of Mount Carmel, having heard the prayers of your chosen son Saint Simon Stock. Help us now to wear it faithfully and with devotion. May it be a sign to us of our desire to grow in holiness.
(pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Third Day

O Queen of Heaven, you gave us the Scapular as an outward sign by which we might be known as your faithful children. may we always wear it with honor by avoiding sin and imitating your virtues. Help us to be faithful to this desire of ours.
(pause and mention petitions) s)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Fourth Day

When you gave us, Gracious Lady, the Scapular as our Habit, you called us to be not only servants, but also your own children.
We ask you to gain for us from your Son the grace to live as you children in joy, peace and love. (pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Fifth Day

O Mother of Fair Love, through your goodness, as your children, we are called to live in the spirit of Carmel. Help us to live in charity with one another, prayerful as Elijah of old, and mindful of our call to minister to God's people.
(pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Sixth Day

With loving provident care, O Mother Most Amiable, you covered us with your Scapular as a shield of defense against the Evil One.
Through your assistance, may we bravely struggle against the powers of evil, always open to your Son Jesus Christ.
(pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Seventh Day

O Mary, Help of Christians, you assured us that wearing your Scapular worthily would keep us safe from harm. Protect us in both body and soul with your continual aid. may all that we do be pleasing to your Son and to you.
(pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Eighth Day

You give us hope, O Mother of Mercy, that through your Scapular promise we might quickly pass through the fires of purgatory to the Kingdom of your Son. Be our comfort and our hope.
Grant that our hope may not be in vain but that, ever faithful to your Son and to you, we may speedily enjoy after death the blessed company of Jesus and the saints.
(pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

Ninth Day

O Most Holy Mother of Mount Carmel, when asked by a saint to grant privileges to the family of Carmel, you gave assurance of your Motherly love and help to those faithful to you and to your Son. Behold us, your children. We glory in wearing your holy habit, which makes us members of your family of Carmel, through which we shall have your powerful protection in life, at death and even after death.
Look down with love, O Gate of Heaven, on all those now in their last agony!
Look down graciously, O Virgin, Flower of Carmel, on all those in need of help!
Look down mercifully, O Mother of our Savior, on all those who do not know that they are numbered among your children.
Look down tenderly, O Queen of All Saints, on the poor souls!
(pause and mention petitions)

Say: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

If you happen to be near the Carmel in Elysburg PA, they are having the Novena said with Holy Mass followed by a reflection afterwards. This starts tonight at 7:00 pm and on the 16th (the feast day) they will be having a Pontifical High Mass. It would certainly be a day that would be wonderful to be at a Carmelite monastery! :)

Thank you for posting this novena, VJAM.  We are doing this novena after mass in our parish.  This is the one posted by the Carmel of JMJ which we have very close ties with since there are so many who are there from our parish.

Your very welcome, inperpetuity. That's really great that your parish is doing this novena. At the parish I attend we have the St. Anthony of Padua novena every Tuesday with a relic of his, but it would be nice to have more novenas done at church. I just went to the Friends of Carmel website and they are also posting the novena sermons on the site. They have two so far and they are good meditations. It seems that the theme is knowing ourselves so we can truly know and love God. I like how he mentioned (Father) in the first sermon that even in the cloister one can still run away from Him. Its so true that who we really are comes out in the cloister environment. I think part of this has to do with the life itself; silence, solitude, and not having distractions to get away from things, or ourselves! :) Its really understandable that one has to be at the supernatural level to be able to persevere in the cloister.

Yes, the sermons are great.  I am wondering if the priest is Fr. McLucas.  He was filling in as their chaplain in Elysburg for a few months, so he may still be there.  I'll have to email him and see if he's still there.  He's a wonderful priest.  He was our chaplain in NY for 3 years until the archdiocese closed the church.  We had a growing congregation of about 150 families and then :alone:

CROATIAN CARMELS – DISCALCED CARMELITE NUNS

Take note on how their veils are arranged – very similar to O. Carm. Nuns in Spain and the Philippines.  Also, they only have one veil just like Port Tobacco and Terre Haute Carmels; usually OCD Nuns have day veils tucked under the scapular and communion veils.   Also, these Carmels has their scapulars are cut high above the chest – almost to their necks.

Their parlor grilles has an interesting design.  Very modern.

You're Welcome, Chiqui!

I might add that Carmels in East Europe is flourishing!  They have a lot of vocations and not just for Carmels but for other monastic - cloistered orders as well.
