according to the catholic church, there is a difference between socialism and a basic social safety net, which people have a right to, and it's the government's responsibility to ensure that that's the case....

I agree with the statement that there is a difference between socialism and a basic social safety net.  Socialism encompasses a lot more than 1 single aspect of government.  I disagree that people have any kind of right to a social safety net.

But if you want to provide a source for what you just said (something that points to actual Church teaching, rather than a random pope quote), I would be willing to read that.

what do you base your decisions on if not pope quotes? in the pope quotes i linked, they said people have a right to get the resources they need to survive. they also said the government has a role to ensure that that happens. healthcare is out of touch to most people, so the government should correct the situation.  as far as i'm aware, the quotes i linked you to have as much weight as anything you are basing your decision on, and that's not to mention that socialism isn't the same as a safety net anyway.

I would say, in general, Church Councils, Encyclicals, and the Bible all bear more weight than something the pope says off-the-cuff.

Basic affordable heath care should be available to all, no question.   Including birth control, free abortion for healthy viable fetus is not or should not (can not) be part of any such plan.
