 That Wuerl claims to not have heard the rumors is incredible.  The rumours about "the beach house" were known to me, a dippy 21 year old RCIA candidate in the Archdiocese of Washington D.C., back in 2004. I dismissed them as a nutty right wing conspiracy theory, as did many, but the rumours were widespread.
