Roe v. Wade - The Coat Hanger / Back Alley Argument

Others claim: If abortion is illegal, women will be forced to resort to back alley abortions; women will die as a result of abortions performed with coat hangers, like in the old days.

I reply: Abortion will never go completely away. There were illegal abortions before Roe v. Wade, and there will be illegal abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned. However, they will not be performed with coat hangers. Some percentage of doctors will perform abortions in their offices, perhaps under the pretext of rape, or incest, or the health of the mother, or the health of the fetus, or whatever other loophole they can find in the law. Additionally, abortion will probably remain legal in about 40% of states - women who want abortions will simply seek them in those states. Lastly, "back alley" is a meaningless but emotionally loaded term - all alleys are "back alleys."

If women are so desperate that they seek illegal and dangerous abortion, the point is to address the conditions that bring about thus desperation, not to give in to said desperate conditions.

Allowing for an abortio n on such terms ALLOWS the desperate conditions to persist, preventing women from getting the support they need at the expense of an unborn child's life.  In fact, abortion is the easy way to clear away to need to support women in these difficult situations rsther than helping them and is THE POSITION THAT IS MOST ANTI-WOMAN!
