Nuns Picture Thread

Nice to hear about a new order welcoming late/widowed vocations, and I am sorry and hope this won't wound, but in all charity I hope that habit gets re-thought, especially that snarl of lace. Sister looks like an 18th century dowager baroness. The Sisters of Life had an awful habit until Cardinal O' Connor asked them to adapt something along the lines of the Nashville Doms.

Any pictures of their original habits? I think I'd be interesting to see.

:like: Understandable why, in the picture, the Sister is gazing at the sign (?). If I wore a sign that rich in meaning, I would [s]also[/s] always be peering down at it as well!

Laughing... Now I know I am old! this sister in the picture is not gazing at the sign but keeping custody of the eyes. In the old days if something did not concern you you did not look around at everything with idle curiosity but rather kept your eyes downcast so as to help maintain a spirit of prayer and recollection. Some orders also attached to it a n additional meaning of humility.

I was taught this in my early religious formation, i think for the most part it has gone by the wayside. Hope this helps. :hehe2:

Thank you Sister for the correction. Unfortunately, I wish I could say I did not know about custody of the eyes, but I do! Obviously I haven't been around enough people who utilize it to know what it looks like-and I don't hardly ever practice it as I should. :P

I know Saint Colette put into the PCC constitutions something akin to "Let the sisters always keep their eyes cast down as a sign of holy humility." It's a shame more of us laypeople do not practice this!

My sister is a Nashville Dominican and she said they practice custody of the eyes. She taught us about it!

My mom and grandfather always used to tell me and my sister to look up to see where we were going instead of looking at the ground. Apparently, in the outside world, it doesn't look appropriate to look down. My mom even got after me at Church a few months ago for looking down again.

I had one a very long time ago and will have to see if I can find it. The Sisters of Life had been given an abundance of an awful neutral-tone (off-tone, really) tan color, and if memory serves, they had a tunic and scapular, and it was all as dull as paint drying, but Mother Agnes was grateful for the free material and figured, "make do." Really glad Cardinal JJO decided it wouldn't do!
