They have very pretty habits. What are their veils made of? They look like little handkerchiefs. Charming. :)

Bumping the Picture/Photo thread, because someone started a discussion thread about "the most beautiful habit." A picture is worth a thousand words.

It's time for another bump! Don't let this thread disappear to the archives!

Although I also love beautiful long veils, I like these Sisters' veils as well. They seem very simple and practical, and speak to poverty and no longer caring how you look--yet are obviously a veil.

When I see very beautiful veils, as much as I love them, I still wonder whether the Sisters/nuns have a more difficult time letting go of that last bit of pride in their appearance, or pride in the beauty of their veils. I suspect that after a time, the vast majority of Sisters never think about how beautiful their veils are. And, for Sisters very new in religion (before taking final vows when they have not yet renounced the world), perhaps a bit of pride that they are beautiful for Jesus helps them through the difficulties of formation.

Still, these Sisters look very approachable and comforting, yet unlike some very modified habits, these are obviously religious habits.

Their habits and veils seem very much in the style of the Puritans to my eyes, and also the Amish - simple, modest but also very becoming.

The veils are quite interesting. They are made of fairly stiff material and are pleated at the back. There is a length of elastic under the chin which keeps them in place. Here are some pics which show what they look like from the side:

They have a house not far from where I live in Jerusalem. One sees them out and about from time to time.

Silver lining in every cloud:
these O.Cist. nuns will soon have a new chaplain, Common Observance Cistercian like themselves.
The cloud, of course, is that their new chaplain's abbey is closing soon -- Our Lady of Spring Bank, Sparta, Wisconsin.
