the lords sheep 2
Veritas tried to add a smiley and it didn't work. I think this is what she meant:
VeniteAdoremus 11
"Bumping" a thread means adding a post not to join in the discussion, but to make the thread appear higher on the thread list. It's usually done by saying bump.
Thomist-in-Training 5
For EJames or anyone: What are the pockety-looking, yet not pocket, loops on the side of the Carthusian habit?

the band of cloth you speak of, has an actual name, that i don't remember, but will find out in my books. its purpose its practical for keeping the hooded scapular(its actually a 'cowl' because it has sleeves)somewhat together, from flying up and out. so its actually an 'opensided cowl.' Margaret Clare can probably ring in. PAX Edited June 30, 2008 by EJames2
genesisweavers 42
EJames is correct - the purpose of the straps is to keep the scapular on the Carthusian habit from blowing up and covering the monks faces which could be dangerous. Because they live in such remote places the weather conditions can be very extreme. I heard that the habit is fashioned after the garments of peasant shepherds who lived in the region of the Grande Chartruese at the time of their founding (11th century, right?). your brother john

That's what I figured the bands were for: just for a practical reason, to keep the front and back sides of the scapular/cowl from blowing to the side or into one's face from the wind. That's interesting, it was fashioned after the peasant shepherds who lived in the region of the Grande Chartruese. I bet there's more written about this somewhere, probably in French at least. I'm not sure about a particular title for them, as there isn't one on the Carthusian site in this description of the nun's habits.
The nun’s habit is similar to the monk’s: white robe, cowl with lateral bands for those who have taken vows. However, instead of the monk’s hood the nuns wear a wimple with their veil.
http://www.chartreux.org/
