My mother was a convert and contemplative life to her was an horrific choice and to her a running away from the reality of the world - a refusal to face and live in reality.  I think the call and consequent attraction to contemplative life is a special Grace that not all receive, but then marriage too, or any other vocation, is a special Grace not all receive.  And one might not understand the other, although not necessarily so.  Ideally one can grasp the Theology of Grace and The Mystical Body
