Psalm 22

Does anyone know where I can find a good commentary on Psalm 22 by a Greek Church Father?

I can think of some texts that may very well be of interest if you happen to have a phat library close by.

1. [i]The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture[/i] - The pertinent volume will give you short commentary and places to look for more.
2. [i]Saint John Chrysostom: Commentary on the Psalms[/i]
3. [i]Theodoret of Cyrus: Commentary on the Psalms[/i]
4. [i]Theodore of Mopsuestia on the Psalms[/i]
5. [i]Diodore of Tarsus: Commentary on the Psalms[/i]

Besides the formal commentaries such as these I might suggest combing through collections of homilies and the like since many Fathers commented on the Psalms without producing a systematic commentary or without having a compilation of this kind made available in English. Besides book #1 above you might want to look into similar books that will provide references to other works worthy of investigation, for example: [i]Grace for Grace: The Psalter and the Holy Fathers[/i].

I ended up with Theodoret of Cyrus, a Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church, and Grace for Grace.

Maybe later this semester I'll hit up the Library of Congress.

Oddly enough, I found those books before you posted!

Yeah, I suppose there are more works of this kind available in English for the Latin Fathers. It would be cool for someone to comb through the Greek Fathers and compile a massive commentary on the Psalms. The [i]Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture[/i] series is cool but too short and partial for my taste.

My library here, by the way, is pretty good. However, the Library of Congress is so much better.

I know how it is btw. There are plenty of subjects that interest me greatly and yet it is almost impossible to find decent source material. For example meticulously researching the work done just a few decades ago by the Consilium and ICEL. You'd save up some serious frequent flyer miles trying to pin down all of the records and source materials. I've determined that it would require interviewing the people involved who are still living and gaining access to a few repositories of specialized information which don't happen to be anywhere near me. It would also require collecting an insane amount of old scholarly publications in a variety of languages and a mass of ecclesial documents that could fill a large room. I have an amazon wishlist devoted to such things but of course that which is available on amazon is a mere tip of the iceberg. Basically you could devote a library to this limited subject and still not have everything. Maybe I’m exaggerating, but I don’t feel like I am. haha
