Have you heard about the "Five Fold Scapular" (Mother Angelica mentioned wearing one.)

Have you heard about the promise of the Brown Scapular -- "Whosoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire."

Or the Sabbatine Privilege?

The Sabbatine Privilege (which obtains for you special assistance from Mary in the form of her securing your release from purgatory on the Saturday after your death) is also associated with this scapular.

To obtain this promise, an individual must meet certain stipulations

1.) wear the scapular, 2.) observe chastity, 3.) recite the Little Office of Our Lady daily (with permission of a priest, the Rosary may be substituted). I believe you are supposed to live a virtuous life.

This is an especially valuable privilege as it has been said that the average time spent in purgatory is as long as 40 years. And, as St. Caesar of Arles has said (circa 540 A.D.), "That purgatorial fire itself will be more difficult than any punishments that can be seen or imagined or felt in this life."

This particular scapular is made of brown woolen material and usually contains an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It requires that individuals be enrolled by a priest in the Scapular Confraternity of Mount Carmel (which occurs automatically upon the investiture by a priest). Wearers should say the Hail Mary at least three times a day and should also try to say the Rosary daily (which may be required for the Sabbatine Privilege).

Everyone (including non-Catholics) should wear this scapular. Wear it yourself and encourage your family and friends to wear it too. It is a sacramental that can help lead you to holiness and can help you avoid eternal punishment. I wear the brown scapular. Been working on that #2 for a while. I'd expect anyone who achieves it won't need be waiting until the Saturday after their death anyway. :)

Wear my brown scapular all the time!! Thanks for the informative thread! I have one of those five-fold ones too. Need to find it ..
I love the Rosary dearly, though at times it can be hard to pray. Lately though, I find I cannot make it through a day without it! :pm: even a few times recently when I tried to go to sleep without getting one in, I couldn't sleep! and just had to get up to pray it, and slept fine after that .. maybe that was my guardian angel! :cupid:

I recently learned more about the Sabbatine Privilege too, which is in addition to the original promise Our Lady gave to St. Simon Stock, and got that dispensation from a priest to substitute the Rosary for the Little Office. He told me though that Fr. John Hardon, SJ said the document from which the Sabbatine Privilege came was apocryphal, and he, Fr. Hardon, doubted the validity of it. Here is part of one of his (not Fr. Hardon) homilies on the scapular that covers this ..
As for Purgatory, we have the Sabbatine Privilege which is a special promise extended to all who wear the scapular devoutly and are enrolled
in the scapular. There is some controversy over just what this privilege entails. The report is that Pope John XXII (1316-1334) had a vision of Our Lady on March 3, 1322, in which liberation from purgatory was promised on the first Saturday after death, on three conditions: 1) Wear the Scapular 2) Observe 6th and 9th commandments (i.e., chastity) according to one's state in life 3) say the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, OR, if illiterate, observance of the fasts of the Church plus abstinence on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The daily Rosary can also replace the Little Office. Some say the privilege was later confirmed by later Popes such as Pope St. Pius V. The problem is that due to wars and other things, all the documents of the papacy of John XXII were lost. So we do not know for certain. Fr. John Hardon, SJ says this document was apocryphal. At the same time he provides the follow approved decree from Pope Paul V in 1613:

"It is permitted to the Carmelite Fathers to preach that the Christian people may believe that the Blessed Virgin will help by her continued assistance and her merits, particularly on Saturdays, the souls who have died in the grace of God, if in life they had worn the Scapular, observed chastity according to their state in life, and recited the Office of the Blessed Virgin OR observed the fasts of the Church, practicing abstinence on Wednesdays and Saturdays" (Catholic Dictionary). So, the privilege may not extend to total liberation on the Saturday…but it does say that special help will be given on that day.

...

During the Scapular Anniversary celebration in Rome in 1951, Pope Pius XII told a large audience to wear the Brown Scapular as a sign of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our Lady asked for this consecration in the last apparition at Fatima, when She appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It was Her last moving appeal to souls to wear Her Scapular as a sign of consecration to Her Immaculate Heart. And if we wear it rightly, as the Popes have confirmed, She will not let us languish long in Purgatory…
I believe in the validity of wearing the scapular as well as the Sabbatine Privelege. However, say, hypothetically, that it isn't all true… the steps one must take to receive the Sabbatine Privelege are still worthwhile and admirable. I say, continue wearing the scapular, praying and attempting to gain the blessings.

On a slightly different note, I hoped to get everyone's input. I wear a medal scapular (it's a four-way medal locket—gifted to me by my grandmother). I have discussed with my mother whether this medal scapular is valid or not since it isn't made of brown wool. Has anyone heard about medal vs. cloth scapulars?

Yes .. and I have a pamphlet on the Brown Scapular from a Carmel  that says something similar to this also ..
