I know there is an order in England called the Sisters of the Holy House of Loretto. They were founded in Italy and have convents in other places in Europe, but no convents here. Maybe those are the nuns you call Sisters of the Home of the Mother.

Actually I don't think they're Carmelites, though their habit does look VERY similar. And I didn't know there was a... little person in the Sisters of Life? :idontknow:

Hello! That picture of a Little Sister of the Poor is Sr. Cornelia - She is here at the Little Sisters' home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Oh, wait til she finds out that she's on the web! Sr. Cornelia is from Germany. We are blessed to have her here in Cincinnati (a fine German city!).

EJames - I have some Salesian photos that I just know our Salesian discerner friends would enjoy seeing! How can I post these or send these to you to post?
(pardon by ignorance about the picture posting process...)

God bless & thank you for sharing. These are inspirational! Let's pray that it moves hearts to pray and opens hearts to respond to the Lord's promptings.

Daughters of Mary are a "traditional" congregation. Vocations can't be part of the Novus Ordo church. They're affiliated with the Society of St. Pius V, though I don't know exactly what the Society's stance is.

they're so beautiful! i feel so in love when i see nuns. if i see one that is extra pretty and doing something reverent, it feels like my heart is going to burst. almost to the point where i feel kind of "wrong" almost. maybe because it reminds me of Mary.
oh how i wish everyone were in habits or at least dresses and veils, instead of the torture i have to go through each day at school or at the gym.. funny, i once was told i should move to the middle east.

if you think that's bad, sometimes i have to stop by a catholic girls school with all these girls in short skirts looking like britney spears. it gets so bad that i have to keep my eyes glued to the ground or else i'll pass out.

speaking of which, i've seen nuns with skirts that seem a tad too short. what's going on there?!

They are at Assumption Parish in Jacksonville, FL.

And at Ave Maria in Naples.

In Jacksonville, they would somtimes have "Sisterbucks" where they would have some of us over to have coffee and just hang out. They were pretty awesome!

Nope, not here in the USA. A little of the Polish has rubbed off on my friend, though. She may end up going to study in Poland during part of her formation... so who knows. But no, the sisters communicate quiet well in English.

It could just be the color fading from the sun or something, I'm not sure.
Why are the sisters hands wrapped up...I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the ceremony but what is the symbolism/meaning behind it?

They are a hoot! I met them in February at the Here I Am Lord Conference in St. Charles. They invited me to come visit sometime. They are not far from where I go to school.
Also, sorry if I confused anyone with the Polish... But when I was with them at the conference, they had found some Sisters from Slovakia and a Polish priest, so a large portion of my time I sat in awe of their jovial-ness and love and joy as I could not understand what they were saying to each other! It was amazing. :) Amazing, amazing Sisters. One of the Sisters shared her vocation story in a small group that weekend and it was so simple and so beautiful.
I will try to visit them sometime soon to say hello and perhaps catch up a little. I have Sister Margaret's business card. :D:

the habits are faded light brown to dark brown, poverty and sun,,yes..

THey go through a type of Old Rite symbolic anointing of the hands ,ready for SERVICE and offering 'with empty hands'..and as in all anointings in the past, one would wrap them, as a sign of the sacredness, and protection..

Great!, well it is difficult for Americans to maintain, in European Communities i find.
the cells arent as big as the picture implies, its a wide angle corner shot.
the photos are 5 years old..
i hoped to capture some pictures from last years Church Consecration video,, but i dont think the DVD is working on this computer:(

as always some pretty cool monastic life is in France, but a Monk at Solesmes told me once, dont worry about language..spending the rest of ones life inside the walls, gives one alot of time to learn.
( but the huge amount of silence makes thatlearning a challenge).

Yes, i find the' Community of the Beatitudes' habit (both Sisters and Bro's ) is amongst my favourite, as you see in pics below, they wear all white for simple professed, but at Perpetual Profession below, they receive a brown Scapular,..the brown Scapular, signifies the cross, and the white habit signifies the Resurrection...

Just a NOTE, that because the Community mixes usage of Rites(East/West), and Celebrates the Mass of Ranguile( sp?), while they DO have complete approval of The Church,(Local and Rome) some of their Liturgical practices (like not Kneeling at Mass,Communion under Both Species always ,etc.)may be surprising, or odd,or senseless ,(as they are to me), to Americans, and Traditionalists. they try to imbue there liturgical Life with a Byzantine and Charismatic sense, yet completely within a Latin Tradition.

awww my new favorite nun habit. soo cuuute. white and some blue, just like Our Lady. and the cape drapes straight down the front, like a princess from Cinderella or midieval times, and like the Fatima statue in Fr. Corapi's series on Fatima.

it's so adorable. if everyone wore that the world would be a happier place :D:

actually the head veil does look.. interesting. looks like something you would wear while doing labor to tie up the hair. what i do like is the white cape on the blue dress.

if i were to ask a woman to marry me on bended knee, i'd wish for her to look just like this when i pop the question..

its a Veil type that would be more of an ancient Middle East way.
Yes i know what you mean, when i stayed with them in Montreal(Bro's) at their foundations beginning ,while working, and in Paris,i noticed the Sisters, especially with longer hair, were constantly fixing and retying the back..but! i do see that in old Jerusalem/Palestine, the consecrated Virgins would have had a similar type veil, since the whimple is a recent in history invention.
In Jerusalem, the city, i saw quite a few women,Arabs and Orthodox Jews, with the same hair covering, only usually black.
ALSO, its more practical for the Sisters to remove etc, the ones who work in Public buildings(Since in France Religious/Priests cannot wear habits, clerics etc, in State places like Hospitals, Govt. Agencies, Schools etc), and one Sister is a Doctor, others teachers etc.

Does anyone know the names of these PCPA from OLAM?

I know that the nun on the letf is Sr. Mary Peter I think that the one on the right is either Sr. Mary Helena or Sr. Mary Jacinta, but I'm not sure

This is either Sr. Marie Michelle, Sr.Mary Francis Sharbel, Sr. Mary Regina, Sr. Margaret Mary, Sr. Mary Michael, Sr. Grace Marie, or Sr. Rose Marie (they are the solem professed nuns with glasses)

Thank you very much for your help!

Stanbrook Abbey (link) is a monastery of Benedictine nuns in Worcestershire. The place is indeed fantastic: VA and I stayed there for a few days last Summer and had a whale of a time. The church is very beautiful, designed by Pugin.

However, they're not going to be there for much longer; the community will soon move to South Yorkshire and the monastery buildings will probably be turned into a hotel and spa.

The Apostolic, Sisters of St. John, as pictured in the earlier post are located in;
Belgium (at the Shrine of Banneux)
11 places in France
4 African Countries

Well they are dressed exactly like the 'Marian Sisters of Israel and St. John', in the Dioceses of Lyon, France, but its odd they are out and about, since i knew them to be very penitential, and practically hermit like....the Bishop and primate of France suppressed them 3 years ago? the Foundress was a bit, lets say, off her rocker..but.. perhaps a little group has prevailed ,regathered and straightened things out?

Yeah, I've heard of this community too and how they were suppressed, because of the problems with the Mother foundress. Their habits were just like the Apostolic Srs of St. John, except blue. Maybe they were out for a special occasion/pilgrimage to Lourdes. Probably this picture of the sisters is an old one. I can't find the article online where I read about them, but I remember it said at the end that several other orders were ready to receive the sisters from this suppressed community, so that's good.

I remember them saying something about being sœurs de St. Jean. I remember them saying they were in St. Jerome , that their order was a new one, that their founder was a Dominican, and that they had been in St. Jerome for (about 10 yrs, can't remember the exact number they gave). Their habits were pale grey and they wore white wimples. In fact, they looked like the sisters in this pictures:

However, thanks to the French wikipedia and this line in it: "Les sœurs contemplatives portent en plus un voile blanc et les sœurs apostoliques un voile gris", I can agree that they were the contemplative sisters. When I read that line I remembered noticing their white veils because they're sewn in back. Um, that wasn't a good description... let's see... to help the veil sit properly, there's a vertical seam down the part of the veil that doesn't sit on top of the head, that runs down the back of the head and neck. It's a little like the seams that are sewn to tailor a bust. It probably helps keep the veil neatly on her back as opposed to floating around everywhere, and on her head because it now has some of the advantages of a hood. The middle picture here can give you some idea.

Yes in St Jerome they are Contemplative Sisters of St John, i didnt choose the best Pictures for them as this one is made up of 80% Novices, hence no whipple, youll notice one or 2 Sisters on the background with full veil, fully professed..also, even the Contemplative Sisters in hot countries and hot weather, as the Brothers, wear a thinner light-grey habit.
SO to sum up simply..
=Apostolic Srs of St. John, grey veil (whipple for professed)
=Contemplative Sisters of St. John, white veil(whipple for professed)

Actually those are moniales, nuns. Thanks for posting this photo of our nuns in Canada. They have trouble getting vocations because of the religious climate in Canada. Although they mostly speak French they are part of our Association of the Nuns of the Order of Preachers and come to our meeting every 4 years. They are always a joy to have with us, especially Sr. Julie and Sr. Micheline. Again, their "style" is more of that of the European monasteries than of the US, but in essentials we are all alike! It's wonderful; you can go to any OP monastery in the world and feel right at home immediately. I know because I've had this experience.

Thanks for this continuing "supply" of photos. It's so much fun!

Thank-you Sister...i usually dont put 'Moniales' (the french word for Nuns literally- female monks), because most folks wouldnt know French..and yes, i do liberally interchange Nuns and Sisters (incorrectly),too often. Yet, arent you a Nun? and we call you Sister.?

Emile-James
As I understand it, a nun is a religious sister that takes Solemn Vows and is enclosed, while a religious sister takes simple/perpetual vows and is not formally a nun, though generally speaking, she can be called nun, as we in the US interchange the two a lot.

It does confuse me though, because once when I was telling someone about the Sisters of Bethlehem they were saying to me, why don't you just become a nun. She kept asking me, but do they take Solemn Vows? Well, I guess not - they take Final Vows. But is it that big of a difference in the eyes of God?

As I understand it, Solemn Vows are something only nuns in an established Order (with a capitol "O") can take. But an order like the Sisters of Bethlehem does not have that status, so they take Final Vows. They are a Religious Institute of Pontifical Right though. I asked a sister at Livingston Manor about it, and she said it's the same thing - Solemn Vows / Final Vows. I also asked a great priest once, and he was saying he thinks it's more of a canonical thing. I think what matters in this is what the vows mean before God, and not man.

And now some pictures from Les Voirons. I love this sister! I met her when I was on retreat there!

Actually the difference between Solemn Vows and perpetual vows is more than canonical. According to the new code of canon law there is no difference unless stipulated in the constitutions. I recently learned that the OMI's make solemn vows.

Solemn Profession is more than just about poverty, ie. one don't only can't acquire goods one doesn't own anything, whereas with perpetual vows one actually continues to own but doesn't have the right to adminster one's goods.

According to natural law every person has the right to own goods. We give up this natural right by Solemn Profession.

With Solemn profession if one would run off and get married it would be invalid whereas with perpetual vows it's illicit.

OK. That sounds very dry and dull but it has deeper practical implications.

Only the Pope can dispense NOT from the vow in solemn profession but from the obligations. Solemn Profession is a total holocaust between the person and God and even the Pope can't undo this.

What one is saying with Solemn Profession is that one completely hands oneself over to God. Yes, essentially it's what matters is before God but we are creatures of body and soul and don't live in the mind although the modern world things so. So, we express this total self gift, total holocaust in a physical, created way. Let's face it; "that's mine" is something that seems to be ingrained in us from the day we were born! By Solemn Profession GOD consecrates and we in a new way we become His! The "stuff" of ownership and non-ownership is the expression of saying to God, "I belong to you; you must take care of me."

Our profession is an ecclesial act. It's accept and ratified by the Church, it's not just a thing between me and God.

It's really too bad the the new Code didn't continue this distinction because there is a difference. It doesn't make a person in solemn vows better than someone in perpetual vows but it's a real distinction. It's ABSOLUTELY a gift of God.

We tend to use "moniales" to talk about the OP nuns as Sisters means the apostolic congregations. And yes, it's confusing because we call ourselves Sisters. The first nuns of Prouilhe were called "ladies". Hmmm. I don't think that would go today! We were also called the Sister Preacheresses.

Lauren the European monasteries tend to be more broad about enclosure. Many don't have material separation and many have guest houses, hostels which means more interaction with the public. Many will have the public join them for the Liturgy. Their Offices also tend to have more musical instruments like zithers.

Many of them have an industry like cookie making.

And a lot of them wear those ugly kerchief style veils! They always fall off!

Hey, thanks for the reply Sr. Mary Catharine. That's very informative. I guess my only question remains, I know that if the Sisters of Bethlehem could have Solemn Vows, they would. They live the wholly contemplative life and completely abandon themselves to God in this same way. But the reason their vows aren't solemn is because they're a Religious Institute and not an Order. I would want to completely give my life over to God in Solemn Vows, and I'm sure all the Sisters of Bethlehem would feel the same way too, like the Carmelites or Poor Clares or Dominican Nuns. They definitely live the monastic life to the full, without compromise. I do wish the Church could grant religious institutes such as them the privilge of Solemn Vows. But for some reasons it's only for the nuns in Orders.

I just had a correspondence with a priest who said that according to the 83 Code there IS NO distinction between Final/perpetual and Solemn and that one could have the act of renounciation that we have with Solemn Vows with Simple vows if the it's in the Constitutions of the institute.

However, I was not taught it quite this way but he may be right. Believe it or not, now I'M confused!

Will do a little more research and get some advice and let you know.

Again, dont' mean to highjack. I'll do a separate thread.

That is seriously old school. It appears as though one is looking in on Saint Francis and his followers themselves!

I would like to thank everyone who has posted pictures here.
The joy that you see in the Sister's faces is such a "pick-me-up."
I often come on this site to see the pictures when I've had a bad day.
Seeing all the smiles and beauty I can't help but feel better.

Please know that I appreciate what you are doing.

Awesome!- these are the Salesian Sisters of St John Bosco, the order Philosobrat and I will be entering this August 4th!! ( 1 month and 22 days to be exact!) These are the Sisters of the western province, the Sister furthest to the right is Sr Sandra Neaves, the Provincial of the Western US. This picture and story will in my Sunday paper as well!- the retired Sisters have taken to praying for one member of the Spurs basketball team each. The article says they're even in contact with the NBA from time to time. :-) GO FMA's!!

Salve Procession. Yes, into the refectory!
Because we have Perpetual Adoration we aren't allowed to have the Salve Procession in the Choir but must process out and then back. So we go to our Lady's statue in the refectory.

Ok, Handmaid... what team are you rooting for because I want to get a headstart in my bugging our founder... haha... I have given up on the Cubs. :sadder: So should we go with Eastern sports teams (for our province) or Western (for our formation house?!) :topsy:

1 month and 21 days!! yeehaw!

I love the Sisters in the uniform with the cane... so great. Our older Sisters are so funny. :)
