Extern Sisters

Recommended Posts

Dear phatmass phamily,

I'm not doing any serious discernment at this time, but I am curious with the vocation of an extern sister.

Does anyone know of any communities that have extern sisters? If so could you please post them?

Has anyone here ever discerned about this? Or ever experienced it? Feel free to PM.

Thanks so much!

Allie

Dear Allie,
in case you didn't search for previous threads:
http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/index.php?showtopic=103556&st=0

also, the first that comes to my mind is the
Dominican Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Michigan
(Farmington Hills, outside of Detroit)
I recommend that you do a little homework at the Farmington Hills monastery website, BECAUSE:
there are Monastery History pages there, and one entire chapter, out of "Century of Adoration," covers
-- you guessed it -- Extern Sisters.

The Carmelites in Buffalo have 2 extern sisters. It is my understanding that they reserve it for mature vocations but you'll have to contact Mother Prioress to be sure.

Also, the Pcpas have externs.

St. Joseph Carmel in St. Louis needs a new (young) extern sister. She greets the visitors, does the grocery shopping, decorates the altar at Christmas time. Full habit, sensible group. Full-time position for life. Low pay, but room and board provided, and many fringe benefits.

Yeah, I've heard the benefits are out of this world. ;)

Last month's thread about it should be pretty helpful! You can always PM me, too :)

Also, the book "A Right to Be Merry" talks a lot about extern sisters.

You can PM me too. And I second the suggestion about A Right to Be Merry. You have to find an older edition of the book. For some reason they took the chapter about Extern Sisters out of newer editions of the book, I think after their community stopped having externs. Maybe they thought it would be misleading to discerners. Kind of a shame, I think... I thought that was one of the best chapters of the book. And not only because I'm biased.

LOL, yeah, it's one of my favorite chapters too :)

Were you planning to remain an extern, too??

a Discalced Carmelite monastery near us have externs. They wear slightly different habits compared to those in the enclosure. i am not sure with this but i think their cells are not within the enclosure proper (because they still have their grilles.)

i saw an old photo of the community and the externs wore a very different habit back in the 40s.

Yes! I was dying for my canonical year to be over so I could go back to extern life. There were definitely things I liked about the cloister but I knew very quickly after I started my canonical year that the cloister wasn't for me.

This was the first place that came to my mind, they are so beautiful. And I didn't know that they had information on their site concerning extern sisters. .. I CERTAINLY will take a look at that!

Thank you!
