I can just see it in the church bulletin: competition to design the new vestments, open to anyone 7 and under.

WOW!

Leprechauns DO throw up!!!

Wow, we have found some HORRIBLE vestments! Wonder who will win!

Some of those 'modern' ones are really bad.... A lot of those came in in the '60's and '70's but they haven't been tossed.... know I have been in parishes where they sat, sad and forelorn, in the back of the vestment cabinets.... no one wants to toss them (they are vestments, after all...), but no one wants to wear them, either! Maybe next year's ash wednesday pyre?

However.... got to admit that there are some modern vestments that are really attractive.... and a few of the older ones really were UGLY as well! And a few that were unintentionally funny!

Last Advent... one of the priests in our parish wore a gorgeous rose vestment that is probably about 100 years old...
He did look fantastic in it - rose goes well with his skin color... and I love the spiritual significance of the rose However.... we were advmiring it after mass (and it was beautiful... velvet, woven orphreys, etc.)... looked a lot like this one, except the design woven into the velvet was different:

Father commented, "I love this vestment, but I know why no one will wear this just before Christmas -- REINDEER!"

We looked more carefully, and as soon as he said it, we could see them.... prancing all over the vestment. They were Harts, actually (i.e., horned deer) but they DID look like reindeer... just an entire herd of them!

Here's similiar detail of peacocks & harts from a different vestment found on-line (except this one does have some liturgical imagery woven in with the beasties:

Not so sure about these, either.... I get the imagery, but... just not sure. Gorgeous vestments, however!

Those would only be worn on All Souls Day, I believe. Our priest told us on All Souls Day that it was the only day that the vestments worn are black, I think.

I believe black vestments used to be worn at funeral Masses... although those are a little too morbid for my taste... (must be a carmelite thing--- all those skulls on it..)

in fact, i believe Latin funeral Masses require black vestments...

HI, Ms Scripture (and Dominican Soul - posted this not realizing you were doing it as well!) Brilliant minds!

I know... I figured it was for All Souls.... and long ago they sometimes were worn for requiem masses as well...

NOt sure it is Carmelite - looks like a black & white Dominican vestment to me

I am just not so sure about the skulls and bones motif....but it just isn't my spirtuality... but I know it works for some people. Kind of like the Franciscan Friars' church in Rome:

I wouldn't want to go there... but it would make one think....

My sister's rosary crucifix has a skull and crossbones at the bottom. And she's pretty Dominican, DS. :P

:) well, i just know that for a while there, carmelites had a skull in every cell.... in fact, I don't know if its true or not, but in the movie about St. Teresa of Avila, there's this one scene where she drinks out of a skull...

definitely not my spirituality at all!!!

They do. If anyone can get their hands on My Catholic Faith (a book from around the 30s/40s) get it. It's very razzle dazzle to see the old vestments and such in it!

I sure hope so! Or it's annoyed pastoral assistants/secretaries/housekeepers. They could use it as a threat: "Father, if you don't stop using that awful incense, I"m telling the world how awful your vestments are!"

I read somewhere that some of these are gifts from well-meaning parishoners & the priests just kinda go with it. :hehe:
