justfran
What does it mean when the Catechism says that conscience should be based on reason? Is that actually Church Teaching? I've looked in the Roman Catechism and can't find anything about it...
Pio Nono
JMJ 12/30 - Sixth Day in the Octave of Easter justfran, Conscience should be based on reason because it is an operation of the intellect. What that means is that conscience does not come from a "feeling" of doing right or wrong - it is a decision as to whether you do right or wrong. For instance, I may feel that it is the morally right thing to do to break a guy's femur for no good reason, but I know and believe that it is not morally right. My conscience has thus operated and told me that breaking femurs is not morally right. I also have the duty to form my conscience well by discovering the natural law as well as the teachings of the Church. Hope this helps.
