  3. Hi! First of all, congratulations on your acceptance and God bless! I'm currently a postulant with an active order. Should I be accepted into noviciate, I will get a list with items to bring and not to bring (at least this was what the novices told me). So I'm also preparing to pack stuff. Personally, I'd keep a basic set of clothes, small things of emotional value, like diaries, letters and photos, sports equipment (I'll be allowed to keep practising my sport also in the noviciate, might be different in others communities) and my bike (I don't own a car). I'm still kind of torn about what to do with some material from College which could come in handy if I was ever to go back to engineering, which might or might not happen both within the order or if I'm discerning out. I'll also have to deal with my bank account, the savings I have got and my insurances, but this is something my community helps me figure out. I won't have to give up on it until final vows. So mostly it comes down to the things I can bring with me to the noviciate and a few things I'll leave with my mom as I won't need them during the noviciate, but likely later on. Probably it would be best to ask about this in your community and then have a look on what you need in your normal daily life right now. All of your stuff minus what you'll bring to the convent minus things you'll definitely need if you'd discern out, that can be stored easily and are not bringing with you minus things you just want to keep might be what you can give away/sell/donate. For example, I wouldn't keep furniture, if you own them, but a laptop/cellphone. Oh, and did you ask the community how they support members discerning out after years and having to start all over?
  4. Hi! As a more-or-less cradle catholic (baptized as a baby but not raised in the faith) I would tell you two things: 1) take a breath. I've seen a lot onverts (most of them, actually) consider religious life/ priesthood during and right after their conversion, probably, because it sometimes comes across as the more radical way to follow Christ. You might as well be called to marriage or single life (or consecrated virginity). But it seems you have put a lot of thought and prayer into it already. :) 2) Be prepared for surprises, God's plan and timing is often very different from ours :D Which also is true for possible reactions from family members. I was scared to death to tell my "only entering churches for concerts" type mother that I was discerning religious life (because of her reaction a few years prior when I volunteered with sisters) and kept it a secret from her for years. But when I already was in the process of appliing for postulancy and finally worked up the courage to tell her, she reacted surprisingly relaxed and now even thinks it's cool. While my practising catholic father doesn't even want to come to my entrance into the noviciate, should it take place after all. God bless!

Thank you for this, Gracian. How about the Commemorations and their evening devotions? Also, are you familiar with the Grace book that I always read in Carmelite books? Thank you. Pax!

Jean Ritchie was an important figure in the American folk music scene for a very long time. She was born in rural Kentucky, and learned folk songs the traditional way - orally, passed down from one singer to another. She single-handedly made the mountain dulcimer known across the country. And she wrote many of her own songs. Being so steeped in folk music, her songs sound like folk songs themselves. This is "Now Is the Cool of the Day." I post this one because it's be HOT around my neck of the woods lately.

  9. Hi LaPieta, God bless you for your willingness to follow Jesus. I have dealt with family over the last year or so that can't quite figure out if they're supportive of my discernment or not - one moment my mother is telling me she will never support me in any way in doing this, the next she says she'd be super proud if I did end up devoting my life to God. What she hasn't quite figured out is that I'm going to devote my life to God whether in the world or in the convent, lol. I think for parents, there's a lot of complicated emotions and worries that come up when we start our journeys with God, especially if they aren't Catholic. I think right now it's best to just take things one step at a time. Your heart is on fire for the Lord and that's amazing, but most of the time what makes our parents nervous is if they feel we are jumping into something quite extreme without proper thought or preparation. If you just focus on following God through your journey and showing them how he continues to transform your heart, no matter where you end up, that will help, I think. I think also something that has helped my parents a lot is showing them that I am open to the idea that what God really has in mind for me may not be what I think it is - it brings them comfort that I am not going to force my way into doing something that I am not being called to. In any case, Jesus has perfect timing, and your path will become clear to you as you go along. We should all pray for our parents during this time as well, that their hearts will also be turned to God with ours. Enjoy this time as you start your journey with God. One of the things us cradle Catholics don't really get to experience is the very same journey you are on!
  10. I'm so glad you posted this - I've been having the exact same problem for years! I always thought I was the only one! The best way to handle this is to pray to St. Christopher as you drive. So far, he's always come to my assistance.
  11. Hello all! I've come across a frustrating problem – I'm experiencing a noticeable vibration while driving at speed, and I've figured out it's coming from the driveshaft. It's particularly noticeable at speeds between 80-90 km/h. Forum discussions suggest it's probably due to imbalance. I'm trying to choose the best way to resolve this? Remove the driveshaft and have it balanced with a machine. This seems like the most reliable and precise method, but it's a lot of hassle – removing, transporting, waiting, and reinstalling it. Doing the balancing on the car itself. This method uses special equipment to balance it without removing. Has anyone here dealt with a similar issue? How did you fix the driveshaft vibration, what method did you use, and why? I want to buy a portable balancer Balanset-1A, like this for Threshing Drum Balancing In this store https://www.ebay.com/itm/395385895800 Any tips or advice to share? I would greatly appreciate any advice and recommendations!
  12. Thank you, Nunsuch! It will take me at least two more years to complete my degree, and if the community would like me to have been practicing for three years, I can stay for an additional year. I am slightly worried that, on paper, it might look like I'm rushing into religious life; when I start going to come and see events, I will have been practicing for ~6 months. I'm hoping that I would be able to explain my situation a little more to a vocations director if that turns out to be the case. All that being said, I think the requirement to wait a few years is a prudent thing for communities to do. There's already so much formation needed to grow into religious life without having to teach postulants the ropes of being Catholic on top of that! For anyone else who comes across this post, I found a thread from several years ago where several users shared their experiences of their parents opposing their vocation. That's not quite my situation (yet?), but I was happy to commiserate vicariously with some fellow converts! :)
  13. Hello and thank you all for your wonderful posts in this area of the site, it's truly been so helpful and a source of light while discerning my own vocation. I'm planning to enter as a postulant with a community in about one year's time as I still have some student debt that I am working at paying off. I've got a conditional acceptance; once I am debt free or have at least reduced my debt to something selling my car + one year's payments via my savings could cover, I can go. At the end of summer I will be moving back in with my parents to dedicate as many funds as possible to the cause. I figured this would be a good time as any to start paring down my belongings in preparation for entrance, but I don't want to get rid of too many things as I've seen in some posts around here that there are some things people wish they had kept over the years. I haven't been able to find much in recent posts of things you'd definitely hang on to when entering in 2024. Anyone have some insight they could share? I have a sort of desire to just get rid of it all but the practical side of me knows that isn't necessarily the right answer. I'll be entering an active-contemplative order, if that's relevant. Thank you and God bless you!
  14. Welcome. Just one point of information that you may not be aware of. Most communities require converts to be practicing Catholics for at least 2-3 years before they will consider them as candidates. Keep that in mind as you begin to inquire into particular communities.

    Rosary - Let's Pray It.

G2.6 Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Bob Dylan wrote "Forever Young" in 1973. It follows the form of a traditional blessing that Jewish parents bestow on their children at the Friday evening meal, but he goes beyond that. While not a Gospel song per se, it does express a father's wishes for his children, with religious references. This rendition is by The Band; I like their soulful feel. Happy Fathers' Day!

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of Battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke Him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl through the world, seeking to ruin of souls.

Dion DiMucci started out as a doo-wop singer in the late 50s. ("The Wanderer," "Runaround Sue"); he was a relevant singer-songwriter in the late 60s ("Abraham, Martin, and John"); and he released Christian albums in the 80s. He's still around, and still making good music, too. This is "Come to the Cross," his own composition, in the musical style he was playing in the 80s - he doesn't try for a "Gospel sound" or for a "Contemporary Christian" sound. It's just Dion writing and singing like Dion.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of the Father. Amen.
