Speaking of which, I just learned that there is a Klingon character in the Wikipedia logo. I haven't been so proud to be a Trekkie since last year.

about quotations I think that we aren't saying that quoting is ALWAYS arrogant. We may start a thread about how to quote in order to make reading and comprehension as easy as possible...and I don't think it would be a bad idea.
I think that very often it is almost necessary to quote documents, but it depends on every case.
I can only say that I'm a teacher, and since I am expected to know quite well my subject, it would be really absurd if I taught ONLY quoting textes or saying to my students: "well, you can read and study this and this".
A teacher is expected to teach a subject to others explaining it with his own words, especially when he has to explain difficult concepts to non expert students.

I understand and can appreciate this. Especially since I am going to be a teacher also. Yes we need to know our stuff, but people (especially high school kids) are going to ask for proof. As a history major (and teacher soon) having a source is of utmost importance. Maybe its this difference in backgrounds that is a barrier between our agreement. Whereas in my field much importance is placed on sources and well, history, other fields (perhaps such as rhetoric or philosophy or writing or political science) place more importance on the ability of the person to construct an argument. I don't think either approach is necessarily wrong, just different. I think a person would be most effective if he had competence in both abilities equally. Sadly though (at least in my experience) this isn't often the case.

And especially on an online forum sometimes (I know I do sometimes and probably did in that thread) people will simply cut to the chase and provide the source particularly if they don't feel like typing out a whole defense when they either don't have the time or they feel that the subject has already been sufficiently answered previously by authorities better equipped to do so. This doesn't excuse the protocol of the poster, but anyone who is really interested in the truth will not quibble over tactics and instead will attempt to address the answer (whether in ones own words, in quotes, or a combination of the two).

You should translate Facebook into Klingon L_D. You'd probably make bank.

You could then translate the Bible! And the catechism! Surely someone must go out to reach the Star Trekkies. I mean, if they did it for the Lol Cats...

But I have to say, I think real men would use it in Pirate English...

Real men use it in Spanish.

Actually, I know Rexi will come in here and say that real men use it in Latin, so I should probably make a special point of saying that that last remark was not serious.

Word. If I had any +1s left it'd be yours. I can't believe people are griping over sources being provided. I understand the irritation with pages of document dumps, but a paragraph or two? I don't think that's anything to get uptight over. It's not arrogant to provide a point of reference or even to say "this explains it better than I could in my own words" (which I see all the time, and frankly find more humble than arrogant).

i didnt think anyone was complaining about providing sources. it was the document dumps and giant posts that consist of nothing but quotes that bother me.

The Klingon Language Institute has already translated the Bible, along with Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing.

:idontknow: I'm not sure I agree. I think some people were of that opinion, but kafka seems to be griping about a more that just some source/backup quoting (among other issues). He got on Rexi's case for quoting two relatively small paragraphs in another thread, maybe it was just how Rex used the quotes he was taking issue with but it all just seems rather petty to me. I don't think quoting a couple of paragraphs is just cause to call people arrogant, ignorant, or immature. Doc-dumps = lame, sure, but the rest of it... just seems rather nit-picky and excessive to me.

 kwim?
