Selah
I understand the need to want to talk to friends on here. It is fun and many here, such as myself, do not have catholic friends around them, so this is where they go. BUT...making tinychats only seems to make trouble. Just now I got a nice view of a man's...erm...nether regions. There were countless others on cam, doing...well, you get the picture. On top of that, ANYONE can go on these chats. That scares me, folks. In addition, a person can also play YOU. Does that creep you out? In the past, people have been cussed out by guests, been harassed in the most profane of ways...and so, tell me, why do we keep doing this? Also, the mod position does little to nothing. If a mod leaves without appointing other mods, NO ONE is a mod, and the spammer gets free reign. So here is what I propose: If you really want a chat room, petition dUst to create one. Tell him what you would like to see in it (web cams, security [only members can post], filters, etc.). This is a safe way to interact with one another without worrying about spammers and perverts who only want to cause trouble. We want a safe, sacred, Christ-centered environment, not an open place for morons to do whatever the heck they please. What do you guys think? It may take a while, but I think that, if enough of us speak up, a chatroom will be created. Veridicus
I don't know that it needs multiple exclamation points, but a chatroom might be a nice addition to the site.
Hilde
Yes, I would really like it to be more secure. With obligatory identification, and it needs to be locked to anyone who isn't a member.
tojo
It would probably be good to have it be members with a certain number of posts, if just any lurker could join then it really wouldn't be anymore secure than tinychat.
zunshynn
sure, it would be nice to have a chatroom as part of phatmass... but I don't think you realize the cost of so much bandwidth. That would be very expensive, and I don't want to pressure dust to add that. Especially because... what, 20 (at most) phatmassers of probably 200 somewhat active PM users actually use it? Most have not even tried tinychat, although I'm sure they know about it... so I don't think its an issue of them trying it and not liking tinychat... I think most are just not interested period in a chatroom.

I wouldn't mind it being password protected either. Example, when you reach a certian amount of posts, a moderator gives you the password to the chat. People under this number of posts could not access it.

zunshynn
He does pay for PM out of his own pocket, I'm pretty sure, with the help of a few that I believe regularly help with the costs. And many of the ones that help with the costs probably don't even use the chatroom... so it would be really unfair to add something that costs a lot of money to maintain, when only a small number use it. If I could afford to help dust out with paying for the bandwidth of a chatroom, I would, but I can't. And considering most of the ones who use the chat are also in college, they probably can't either. I just don't think it's right for people that don't even use something to be footing the bill for a handful of people that do.

And if you think it is unsafe, you shouldn't use it. But that doesn't make it reasonable to demand that dust start a chat. Of our own volition, a small group of us started maintaining tinychat... apart from PM. Just because we liked the idea of it, but decided that server was too unsafe, doesn't mean that we should demand PM adopt one to make up for it, especially when, like I said, only a few people use it proportionately. Tinychat is dangerous, and that just...needs to stop altogether. I am not sure how many would use the chat room. I suppose I could add that to the poll as well
I realize that. zunshynn
There is also the issue to consider that... how would a PM chat be modded? The mods are not here all of the time, and most of them were not interested in the chatroom. How would we ensure that there was always a mod there? If there wasn't we would be at risk for the same problems.

Ed Normile
I really enjoyed the chatrooms we used to have at MSN chat area, it was called Catholicchat . I joined about ten years ago looking for other catholics to talk with, it got to be a real mess, we had ones that would come to bash catholics, actual perverts using private message option to try and meet underage kids, and creeps posting porn. We also were swamped with various protestants trying to proseltyze catholics and those interested in the faith. Several dozen times someone would introduce themself as a priest and offer online confessions! I was constantly defending our beliefs, I used the bible and the catechism for reference, finally the lady who started the room approached me and gave me a gavel, made me a chat host, I was able to monitor pms, and I could boot or ban serious offenders of the room, it was alot of work for a one finger typist. I recruited a dozen good catholics to help out so the room was never left unmonitored. They eventually came up with tools that helped us, such as my favorite where you could hit a control number and a pre written response and a boot would occur immediately. We actually were responsible for a dozen conversions, we had one tool that would provide a link to a suicide hotline for ones who offered they were depressed and thinking along those lines. We also had others who came in and had tools to repeatedly post offensive materials or comments and disappear and return instantly with a variation on their knickname, it was stressful. Finally MSN closed all the chats, I really did not miss it at that point, although I missed the people. MSN had a policy which allowed us to boot, which was throw them out, they could return after 5 minutes, or ban for up to 30 days, which had to be explained to MSN in writing each time, the hacker types , our most profane and consistent one was Latoya, could beat this ban by using a different ip address, we had tools to track it but it was always a little late and soemthing offensive was on the board. It would be great and a lot of fun to talk with the people on this phorum in real time, I would really enjoy conversing with anyone I have read here, if they had a way to fiddler out the nuts and keep them out. I would offer this, be wary of what you wish for, as sometimes you get it. ed
