Thanks, pham! We didn't expect this to have another post, but the story keeps getting better. Our fully recovered friend has his signed death certificate (now voided) in his possession. It was really that close. The cure will be submitted as a miracle for the cause of a Vietnamese priest, who was seen by him while he was in the coma.
