They are called Varroa mites. Actually, the main problem for the bees is that they aren't microscopic, so they are pretty huge on a bee. If you think of something about the size of your fist attached to your body, that's about how big they are for the bees. If they get 4 or 5 of those things attached, it makes it really hard to fly straight! If you don't keep an eye on your bees' varroa mites, they will probably kill the colony.

Actually the problem where I live is not the fleas; it is described as a rabies "epidemic".
