CatherineM
A combination of natural gift and proper training.
Tridenteen
JMJ Her voice really shouldn't be that mature, even with proper training. It has a mature tone to it, and I am still trying to figure out what did to get it to sound like Kathleen Battle. Girls' singing voices change just like boy's, and they mature and either deepen, or get higher. Mine has gotten higher and has more stability. But it's kind of creepy how grown her voice. But the song is beautiful...
Sarah147
Now that I think about it... The Vienna Boys Choir is amazing. However, singing polyphonic is much different than singing solo. It's all a question of perspective

She's trying too hard to have a big mature voice. Her placement is in the back of her throat which causes serious damage in the long run. She is also not even close to resonating. This upsets me because she's being pushed to sound like something that is not physically possible for someone her age. If she continues to sing this way she will get lymph nodes and never sing again. My mother has a friend who this happened to. It's not uncommon.

OnlySunshine
Also, if I remember correctly, Julie Andrews developed non-cancerous nodules in her throat and had to undergo surgery, which was botched and left her unable to sing for quite a while. [/quote] Exactly! Charlotte Church was singing totally wrong too. She was contriving vibrato by bringing her jaw up and down. And she was definitely placing her voice wrong. The voice is a very delicate instrument. Placement is a very difficult concept to understand. You have to find it on your own.

I remember seeing a documentary on the news once about how she was trained in the beginning of her career and it just wasn't right. She wanted to sing lower, but the teacher pushed her to sing higher. Charlotte's natural range is mezzo-soprano and she was forced to sing soprano. Sarah147
Moosey, very interesting explanations! I didn't know that about this girl nor Charlotte. I take it you had a lot of voice training?
