I didn't exactly have the same issues with it as Adam. I never expected that anyone would actually want to venerate the image. I really do like the artwork. My only issue is focused on Mary's face. I have no problems with her being beautiful, or showing some sort of anguish (but I generally associate that with crucifixion scenes or when they "lost" Jesus in the Temple). As a mother, holding a newborn infant, I would expect to see more joy and contentment; even when times are difficult, that child brings you unspeakable joy. It bothers me that I can't see her whole face and she seems devoid of joy. If this is a Christmas card and we are supposed to be celebrating the birth of Our Lord then why does His Mother look so jaded and depressed?

Just sayin'.

I didn't think she looked sad or depressed. Actually, I got a more "This is going to be hard, but with God I can do this" kind of vibe from her face. Maybe I'm just weird :|

Edit: Also, I don't think there's anything seductive or sexy about the picture... Where do people come up with this stuff?

This thread is fun.

I actually like the face. I thought it contained a look of, perhaps, awe or joy. She's not smiling wide, showing her teeth, but has a "wow, I'm holding the Son of God" look.
Actually that's exactly what I thought. She looks holy. The hair across her face isn't supposed to be sexy, it's just supposed to be.. I dunno.. pretty? Phatmassers look wayyyyyyyyyy too far into stuff imho.....

One thing that struck me when I saw the card is the angels look like they're ticked off! What's that about?

Clearly you are reading too much into it. Art is ambiguous, and often people project their emotions onto it, so I'm guessing you have anger issues. :like:

What are you getting at? Are you insinuating I need glasses? Are you saying that because I'm a phatmasser? I'm onto you.. 0_o

Thanks Dr. Phil.:) No, I don't have anger issues... But I do tend to be overly afraid of people who do. I will think about that actually. I need another cup of coffee first though.

But really, the angels don't look happy do they? Not exactly an adoring look on their faces.

Shoot, I can't find the coffee smiley now. Seriously, this forum has the BEST smileys anywhere!

Ash Wednesday

As an artist and commercial illustrator (get me out of here!!!) myself let me just say from a technical standpoint this is brilliantly done. The linework and colors are absolutely gorgeous.

One's own artwork is such a very personal thing to an artist, especially when it's religious art. Doing art can be like a form of prayer. If the artist happens to read this thread I hope he/she does not take criticisms too much to heart, because personal taste of art can become very subjective and it does not take away from the fact that God has blessed them greatly with talent.

From my (again, subjective) point of view, I would have to say Mary's hair does not work to me. Everything else I love, that is the only thing I would really change. I believe Socrates used the word "emo" which was exactly what I was thinking. Mary was a woman who faced the world head on, she would not have hidden behind her hair. The hairstyle is too "current" in a way that is transient and will actually look dated in a few years. To me it is the equivalent of having an icon of the Madonna and Child where the Blessed Mother has feathered hair or a "Rachel" haircut.

Honestly, depicting modern versions of Jesus and Mary or other religious figures can be very, very difficult and it's a very ambitious thing to attempt. It's one of the reasons why I am so terribly picky about religious movies. I certainly have never tried modernizing Jesus or Mary myself, whatever icons and art I've done have pretty much been very traditional.

When I saw the serpent, especially it's rounded head, I was reminded of Aztec/Mayan serpents:

From there, I went to human sacrifice, and then to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the pro-life movement. The serpent made sense to me, especially in light of my thoughts contained in my previous post.
Actually, what it reminded me of was the vision in Revelations 12 where the dragon wanted to devour the Child.

As far as lack of serenity, keep in mind that it was prophesied that a sword would pierce Mary's soul, and she did have to flee to Egypt
with Jesus and St. Joseph in fear for their lives.

I completely agree. I have tried to be very careful to point out that I think the art is very well done, it's simply the facial expression that does not appeal to me. I am sure this artist worked very hard on the image and is proud of his work. He should be, it's very well done. There are just as many people who like the image and see it differently than I do as there are those who agree with me. I'd hope that that would be comforting.

Third it.

The artwork is amazing, I'm just not sure how I feel about it as religious art... something about the look on Mary's face... she looks kind of jaded. I wish we could see her whole face and that she looked more serene or something. (Maybe that's just me, though...)
