13th Anniversary of Shooting at Conception Abbey

13th Anniversary - June 10, 2002 - "When brutal deeds are enacted, it calls for heroic and radical forgiveness. Such acts of violence as happened here on Monday, could only have come from someone in desperate need of help. Hatred, anger, and an unwillingness to forgive only keep us crippled and bound by the evils that surround us. If we endure evil and do not allow it to conquer us, we will share in the victory of Jesus Christ, in the hidden life of the resurrection of Jesus." Taken from Abbot Gregory homily at the funeral mass for Fr. Philip and Br. Damian.

I never knew about this, but I looked it up and there was a lovely documentary made a couple years after it happened on both the monks and their response to the shooting.

The Wikipedia entry on the shooting:

At about 8:40 am, on the morning of June 10, 2002, a 71-year-old man identified as Lloyd Robert Jeffress of Kearney, Missouriwent through the basilica into the monastery, killing Brother Damian Larson, 62, and Father Philip Schuster, 84, and wounding Father Kenneth Reichert, 68, and Father Norbert Schappler, 75. Jeffress carried into the basilica two boxes—one containing aMAC-90 rifle (a Chinese-made replica of the AK-47) and a stripped down .22 caliber rifle. Having made the circuit of the monastery hallways, Mr. Jeffress returned to the basilica where he shot and killed himself. Fr. Philip and Br. Damian were buried in the abbey cemetery following the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on June 14, at which 1200 relatives and friends of the abbey were present. No motive has ever been determined for the shooting.

I can't find anything about a documentary on this event, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's one out there somewhere.

Its mentioned at the bottom of the wikipedia page under external links Jay Kanzler's documentary, St. Benedict's Rule.

I started watching it yesterday and the first part is an interview with the film maker and a camera man, then my flash player crashed so I dont know what happens after 20 mins or so :(

The shooting happened at a time when I was in my selfish bubble away from the Church, so although i was old enough to know about it, I didnt :(

Its working for me now, so it seems that my video problems happened just before the actual documentary starts!  If people want to skip the interviews just go to 20 mins

Thirteen whole years? I was on a private tour with a newly ordained priest of the abbey May of last year. He took me to a hallway and revealed the bullet hole on the ground where one of the monks had been executed.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

I have heard of a motive from a reliable and well-connected source, but I will not share it. This day should be spent praying for everyone involved -- both victims and shooter, not discussing possible motives that may or may not be correct and, ultimately, are irrelevant in the end.
