FutureFiliae
+ Hello all! I am preparing to enter a traditional, monastic Benedictine community in exactly 32 days! Regarding practical matters...my community has requested that my parents file taxes from this year for me. Does anyone have experience with this? I've already gathered all of my financial forms in a folder for them- are there any additional legal matters and/or forms to be filled out with someone filing for me? Please pray for me! JHFamily
I've filed taxes online on behalf of my daughters. Family members may fill in your taxes for you without a power of attorney. However, if anything comes up, and you get audited, they will then have to have you sign one. I assume that your taxes are pretty straight-forward, so the chances of having an audit are close to zero. The item which was the bigger issue for us was their bank accounts. I was put on both accounts so that I could transact any business and hold it open just in case they discerned out. My oldest made her solemn vows last year, and it was easy for me to close out the account and have a cashier's check written to the community. The other daughter is still a novice. I put a little money in that account every other week (as I did with her sister). If she leaves, she'll have a little extra to live on. If she stays, it will form a sort of "dowry". (The community doesn't ask for a dowry; this is just something I do so that we give the community a monetary gift at solemn vows.) If you have a car that hasn't been sold, you may want to put one of your parent's names on that title so that it is easier to sell. Those were the big three for us.
