I think I'll refrain from posting on this particular thread, anymore sacreligious talk and I think I'll pull a self-rightous attitude. Its one thing to discuss tattoos, it's another to suggest God would get a tattoo. It's so materialistic, it hurts...

God bless,

Mikey

Tattoos and peircings are vain.

I mean, either a tattoo is something to proclaim a belief, and its in a modest place. Or it is put there to draw attention to a certian part of the body. Same with peircings.

The more you tattoo, or peirce, and the location it/them, the higher degree of vanity one posesses. Even different cultures are subject to this. They do it because in their culture it is a sign of BEAUTY.

I have ear peircings, I am vain, to a certian degree.
Beauty isnt bad, but it can be. Vanity can become an obsession, such as Narcissism.(sp?)

If you're getting a tattoo to proclaim your beliefs, then great. But if its for attraction reasons, then it is sinful.

Hi CreepyCrawler,

The nipples are very sensitive areas, physically speaking. Breasts are physically attractive for men, so in a sense, they're sexual organs. Not only that, but they're meant to feed babies, so I'd think piercings there would be sort of contrary to the dignity of breasts.

I don't think nose piercings are sinful. I haven't got a problem with ear piercings, either, so long as they're not excessive. To me, excessive is having nose piercings, ten in the ear, nipple piercings, tongue piercings, eyebrows, lip, etc. Stuff like that.

God bless,

Jen

this could become an adults only convo...nobody should pierce their nipples. the female breasts are more than mammary glands, I'm sorry.

BeenaBobba is right, said what I wanted to say.

I found this on EWTN. It'd seem to me that piercing the nipples would get in the way of their function for feeding babies, so it'd be wrong on that basis as well, I'd think.
Oh, so you think God would get a peircing? I think it's not a matter of opinion here, I really don't think anyone would honestly say God would get a tattoo.

If you think my claim for saying I know what Jesus would do is arrogant, then rest assured, it doesn't come from some greater than thou mindset, but from the time I spend in Adoration, just me and Jesus, and I get to know Him. After a while, you begin to know things about Him that you wouldn't have known before. I thought peircings and tattoos were cool once, so it isn't anything that I just came up with to be evil. It came from some serious time thinking over my life and talking to God. I'd hate to say calling me names because I happen to indulge in my spiritual life, and get some real knowledge of His existance, isn't valid ground.
Michael,

Knowing where your opinions come from does lend some credibility to those opinions, but they're still opinions. When you ask the question "Do you think Jesus would get a tattoo?" It's precisely that; a question that is un-answerable in this life. I honestly don't think Jesus would get a tattoo, but do you think he would look down on those who did?

I think the intent of this particular action makes it right or wrong, not so much the action of getting a tattoo. There can be right reasons for getting a tattoo. I got mine not to try and improve my looks, or draw attention to myself, but to have the image of the Sacred Heart with me wherever I go. I can't tell you how many times I've glanced down at it and it reminded me to take a couple of minutes to reflect on the mercy and love of our Lord.

Peace,

Tim

In Western culture, breasts are very sexual but in other parts of the world, breasts are simply seen as another organ and another part of the body, say the thigh, is the sexual part of the body that men like to ogle. I'm not arguing for piercing of nipples, but I disagree that breasts are sexual or reproductive organs. Women w/o breasts (for example, removed b/c of cancer) are able to reproduce and have intercourse, so I would say they are not sex organs. If you want to say they are, then so is the mouth b/c it's used for kissing and very physically sensitive. So are your hands, etc. It's just a matter of definition on my part.

I know I said I won't post here, but I tell you, you made some sense.

A religious tattoo, while I still can't in all honesty say is any good since you are changing the beauty that is natural to every human, by adding "Extras" willingly, if it helps you then I can't in all honesty say too much against it. I'd wish you got a cross, or a Miraculous Medal, or something else that didn't involve your body being peirced and changed, but since it has done good, and since I can't say to what extent of evil mutilation to be will do when the bodies are glorified on the last day, I'll just say it's a good thing you got yours.

Breasts, if you'd like to consider them throughout history, have always been looked upon as sexual organs. Their very function has to do with reproduction.

The only areas where breasts were treated as other parts of the body are paganistic, polytheistic religious areas, and even then, it's not always like that.

In the Asian countries (excluding India) the breasts have always been treated as a sexual organ. Woman in the Muslim religion have always covered up (most of everything else is covered up however, but thats another thread). In middle Eastern culture, we can look to all the religions (polthyeistic) and one may find very little imagry of breasts, and we all know that Judaism condemned walking around naked and revealing your breasts.

The Native Americans had always covered their breasts.

This isn't just a "Western thing".

God bless,

Mikey

Interestingly enough, the Japanese considered kissing to be a very disgusting thing when they first saw Westerners doing it...

Tattoos are bad for you and when you become old and wrinkley it doesnt look so hot.

I think piercings are fine as long as they're not on private parts (that includes nipples). Multiple piercings are fine on the ears, like 2 or 3 in each ear. I myself can only have one in each ear because my ears are sensitive and they get infected easily.

I really have to agree with Filo on this. The things the world has to offer just become less and less cool the more time you spend with Jesus. Pretty soon clothing doesn't seem to have to be elaborate or even flashy. I think most contemplatives recognized this. It's called simplicity. Its doesn't mean don't learn new things or work really hard or not have friends. It means sacrifice and prayer. It is a wonderful life. Tattoo get old. Piercings get boring. The Eucharist is glorious and beautiful. Our Faith is alive and nothing can compare. :)
Jesus is like this, read yo Bible. Simplicity.
