Sick of jeans in Church
This thread has happened before. When is comes to it, jeans aren'ta big deal but have caused a big deal to not be a big deal.

People in the past were willing to sacrifice modesty by dressing in jeans and work clothes etc. and now here we are today, they are a modern daily occurence.

I don't find bule jeans or even pants to be attactive on females. I also don't see how they are "warm." I'm sure as heck not warm when I wear jeans.

Sometimes I wish I am supposed to be a monk or a priest, just so I don't have to put up with the stupidity of fashion.

Two things that hurt me to hear about:
Nuns in jeans or slacks
The Virgin Mary in anything but what she is traditionally represented in

I am wearing a hoodie. ;)
 ::GASP:: WHO puts the Blessed Virgin Mary in inapproriate clothing?! for shame!!

ps. for the record, jeans are NOT warm. when its cold out, the wind goes right through them AND when you move your leg will find the cold part of your pants that wasn't warmed by body heat. i HATE that <_<

So it seems that those that don't feel comfortable in jeans at mass have declared it is wrong for anyone to wear them. interesting.
It's a wee bit different to meet the president - might happen once in a lifetime. Than to meet with Jesus - hopefully everyday. I don't "dress to impress" or try to be who I am not through my clothing. I worry more about my heart than the state of my clothes. As soon as a church has the feel of "we have money" in dress or attitude, its time for me to find a new church.
How does frequency have anything to do with it? It is the dignity of the occasion that determines the level of dress. It's not a matter of dressing to impress. There doesn't have to be anything impressive about dressing appropriately. The dress does effect the environment. This is partly why there are dress codes (along with the tendency to abuse without them). People act better, in general, when they are well dressed. Christendom has a dress code (with a very strict dress code for the Chapel). WHY? Because it greatly contributes to a properly ordered environment which is more conducive, if not necessary, to higher learning. Ronald Regan (requiescat in pace) had a very strict dress code for executive office workers including the order that no one would be permitted in the Oval Office without a suit coat, which he himself always followed. Why? Because of the dignity of the office (whether that dignity actually exists is irrelevant). It is for this reason that I wore my suit for the seven hours I stood in line to pass through the Rotunda and view his casket (while praying the traditional prayers for the dead). Go try to show up at a private audience with the Pope wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt. Not going to happen. Why? The dignity of the Office demands better. St. Pio used to refuse to hear the Confessions of women who were not properly dressed, even though they had waited hours or even days to get there.

If I am being redundant again, I apologize. But my point here is that there is a certain dignity or order that goes along with different occasions. Our dress depends upon that and not necessarily the frequency of the occasion.

Well dressed does not necessitate high expense. Having standards of dress does not necessarily imply an attitude of "we have money".

"Well dressed does not necessitate high expense. Having standards of dress does not necessarily imply an attitude of "we have money"."

Sure it does. History has shown us that. A cashier dresses below a manager. A maid in the whitehouse is not donned in the fanciest clothing. Students at community colleges wear "mall" clothes. Students at harvard wear $1000 suits.

If you're decked out in a $500 suit with a 24 carat gold miraclous medal, hair all primped and nice, I won't worship next to you. In fact I'd sit on the other side of church if it is my only option for mass. You'd make me uncomfortable and I'd be more in tune to what is the person next to me wearing than worship. Those times when I am at mass in a suit and tie (from goodwill) my mind has usually been far from God and more concerned about dress.

You say dressing modestly in less "rich" attire is undignified. Lord help us if He sees us that way because He lied when he said he was here for the sinners and not the righteous.

You are right. This shouldn't even be a discussion.

The point isn't specifically jeans. It is that people just don;t care anymore.

Dressing nicely for church is not wrong. I don't see why you shouldn;t try to look respectable in a place of worship.
Who said anything about impressing Jesus?
I am all about trying to respect him in any way I can.
I dress nicely to show respect, I try not to wear the tatty, stained beholed clothing to church if I don't have to.

My hometown church and my town sure as heck don't have money. But everyone dresses nicely for mass. They don't look like they have a lot of money.... But they do look presentable.

I resent this deeply. All of my jobs have been bluecollar, I come from a farming community. Trust me, not exactly a money-making profession. I helped build the house I live I so my parents could save money, I have worked on that farm for most of my life. That "I Have Money Feel" does not apply here.

I am just dissappointed that people out here in the suburbs dress the same way they do to go to the bar or to a baseball game as they do to CELEBRATE mass.

The point isn;t how much you spend on the clothing,
most of the clothes I wear are bought off of a clearance rack.
You do not have to spend a lot of money to look nice for church and you know it! <_<

You are right "rich attire" is not required for mass, but there should be a modest effort to look presentable.

Who in the... said anything about wearing immodest clothing? I haven't read a single post that says "yeah, go to church in stained clothing with lots of holes in it" or "yeah go dressed as a prostitute".

Some people happen to be comfortable dressed in modest clothing but are not comfortable in suits. Hate to break it to you "oh your a horrible person if you aren't dressed in a suit" folks, but clothing is cultural and you are dead wrong for telling people that they are wrong for wearing nice, modest clothing if it isn't a suit or fancy dress.

You want to dress up in clothes you want to, be my guest, but don't go around condeming others who don't dress like you do.

And you what - so what if someone shows up in stained or crappy clothing. Instead of playing the part of the Pharisee play the part of the Christian and invite them into your home and offer them food and drink.
I feel for you Balthazor...

My mom raised me to NEVER EVER wear jeans to Mass, unless it was an utter emergency or something like that... I think in my entire life of attending Mass, I've only worn jeans once or twice, at least on Sundays. During my senior year, I went to Mass every morning before school, but I cannot remember what I wore for that entire period of time... I know that when my nicest pants were clean, I would wear those pants first... I know that during the summer months, I would always dress nicely that morning, and then after Mass, I would come home and change into a "sturdier" change of clothes... But I do run out of nicer clothes and I have to resort to jeans... Funny thing also, I've been wearing the same pair of pants EVERY Sunday for over a month now... :rolling: They are nice brown pants...

But then you stop and think about how people dress for other things in their day... You should be dressing as though Mass is the singularly the most important thing for that day, because it IS!!!! That's my gripe...

It really bugs me too... I know it shouldn't bug me as much as it does, but lately, I've been ignoring it and focusing in on the beauty of the Mass... ^_^

What ever happened to your "Sunday Best"?
Yeah I know what you mean I have been wearing the same two pair of dress pants and white button up blouse for the past couple months.....except when it is warm enough I have a tea length dress.

But that is my "Sunday best" so that is what I wear. :rolling:

However I recently found a very nice suit on a clearance rack... :D .(hard to find in small sizes) and so I expect that I can wear that once I hem up the pants.

People who get all dressed up for Mass in their "best clothes" can make poor people feel ashamed and too poor to go to church.
