ooohh that makes me mad. They have no right to even think about trying to put an age limit on the popes reign. They are just being big stupid heads!! Gosh its not like the pope is insane he has good mental health just because his physical health isn't great. it means that we have a better example of Christ.

I LOVE JPII!

Edit to clarify:

Even if he was insane, there is simply no way to enforce such nonsense. He would have to agree to step down but that wouldn't bind any subsequent popes to do the same. A Pope cannot be deposed. The only thing a pontiff can effect as far as the papacy is concerned is the manner in which his successor is chosen. He can even appoint his successor if he so chooses.

Grant O Lord, to Your servant, Pope John Paul II, peace, health, and happiness for many years.

God grant him many years, God grant him many years, God grant him many happy years. In health and happiness, in health and happiness, God grant him many happy years.

Amen.

Wow. Does anyone have somewhere that i can find more info on those things? I did not know that. [/quote]
Ah, the times where everyone who was in power wanted THEIR son to be Pope and would fight other families to assume this position... Kinda about the time where there was three Popes and everyone was fighting each other and it was a mess... I don't remember the whole thing exactly, but I did read some about it. We have a crazy history...

Back in the days of corrution and a race for power rather than to lead the flock spiritually... But, we have learned, and as you see today... things are back to where we should be :)

Thats like saying people should retire at marriage when they hit 80. Just because things arent as energetic and smooth like they used to be, that doesnt take away the heart of the matter. Till Death do us part, same for the papal office ;)

JPII may not be able to walk, but he is still smart as a whip, so he is still fit to be Pope. Unless there is a reason they cannot function mentally anymore, they should stay in office until death.

Let's not be naive. The battles for power rage as never before behind the doors of the Vatican. The only difference is that it is no longer fought with armies.

Not exactly. The Pope can retire or resign the Papacy with no repercussions. If he resigns he is no longer Pope. The office is freely entered into, and freely left. Marriage, on the other hand, may not be resigned or abandoned. If one leaves, it does not affect the fact that he is still married. Very different. Marriage is a sacrament. The election and coronation of a Pope is not.
