Norseman82
I was a sophomore in high school seminary, grandson of Polish immigrants, living on the NW side of Chicago a few blocks from Milwaukee Ave (the main Polish thoroughfare in Chicago), in 6th period history class when the announcement came from Father Kielbasa (I kid you not) that the new Pope was from Krakow, Poland. The teacher, a South Side Irish priest named Fr. Joslyn, immediately sent someone to the office to find out if this was a joke. A year later when he visited Chicago, our school had the priviledge of seeing him at Quigley South, our sister school. I remember seeing the Pope bouncing the soccer ball that was presented to him. The Pope was truly a "Renaissance man" who had, as the urban culture would put it, "cred". He was an athlete in his younger days, playing soccer and hockey (I heard an interview with a childhood friend on CNN that he got a scar on his forehead from being hit by a puck, I don't know if he caried it into adulthood). He was active in the struggle against the nazis and communists (he was blacklisted by the Nazis, so had he been caught, he very well may have been executed, for who knows what other anti-Nazi activities he engaged in). He was an actor, a playwright, and a poet. As we've seen in many of the pictures posted here, he also knew how to clown around. And he had to grow up quickly, as he lost his family before adulthood, and I can personally relate to that. He was a personal example that you can have a normal fun-filled life and still be a faithful Catholic Christian. This all added to his effectiveness and why I will truly miss him. He has big shoes to fill. RIP Papiez. Idz z Bogiem.
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
I don't think their will ever be a Pope like him. He was one of the greatest Pope's ever. I can't see him go. I can't imagine another man doing his job. He was so good at it. I am so sad.... i know he is in heaven with our Lord and his Mother.
