Why have most of the popes been italian?

Two reasons....

1. The Pope is the Patriarch Archbishop of Rome. And properly speaking the bishop should be someone from the local Church. That is why the cardinals are incardinated into the diocese of Rome.

2. Vatican City is in the middle of Italy.

Sounds obvious, right....well, it is. And that isn't a slam.....it is often the most obvious things that are overlooked. Great question.
