A Catholic College is officially not Catholic

The Archbishop of New York has declared that Marymount Manhattan College is no longer a Catholic insititution. His Emminence, Edward Cardinal Egan, has found serious problems with a "catholic" institution allowing a pro-abortionist -- Sen. Hilary Clinton-- to speak at a university event and for conferring upon her an honorary doctorate. This is the second time he has stripped a college of his title as 'Catholic'. Go cardinal Egan!!!!!

Hooray for bishops who are willing to take a stand! :)

There needs to be much more enforcement of Ex Corde Ecclesiae.

It sounds like it is a good thing, however i would rather have the college return to its true Catholic roots than be stripped of being Catholic. Heaven knows we need more of them in this country.

Hopefully the removal of its Catholic status will have a medicinal effect, and the college will do what is necessary to again be worthy of its former religious affiliation.

Ash Wednesday

I view it as an unfortunate but necessary move. "Catholic" Universities have been having a heyday and it's time for some tough love. (Though I think Steubenville, Christendom and Ave Maria I hear are very good)

I heard they had the first Eucharistic procession on Notre Dame's campus in 40 years!!!

is marmount manhattan a jesuit school....??? what is going on here? Catholic universities -- namely Notre Dame -- used to be premeir universities, wrt to orthodoxy, but now they have been caught up in the "Church of New Ways" mentality...

i agree that its a sad thing that it had to happen, but if thats what has to happen then so be it. hopefully its will serve as a wake up call to other universities that might be slackin

I agree with Cmom completely. Many "Catholic" colleges stopped being truly Catholic decades ago. I pity the parents who scraped their savings for years to send their children to Catholic colleges so that they could grow stronger in the faith only to be lead into error by the professors and encouraged to sin by their fellow students. It really breaks my heart.

call me cynical, but chances are it was a money school that didn't care one way or another about it's catholic title anyway. seems to be the route of alot of catholic schools these days. it's a shame. but continue to pray for them.

in wonder what the breakdown is for these colleges?? are they truly Catholic in the sense that the student body is still predominantly Catholic.
I know my elementary/middle school is predominantly Catholic by a hair margin... slipping close to being a Prot school.

wow. i don't know if this is in response to their eviction from catholic colleges or not but i went to their website and there is not a LICK of evidence that they are a catholic school on there except for a) their name and 2) they were founded by an order. so sad!
