Lounge Daddy
Many of the people I work with equate “the mark of the beast” with a chip implant. I was reading in the 666/616 thread about theologians interpreting 666 to be Nero and such. So I’m guessing this chip implant being “the mark” talk is more of a modern American protestant interpretation, like the whole “rapture” belief? Or not? thessalonian
I'm not going to say that the chip implants do or don't have anything to do with Revelations. I will say however that in interpruting scripture while Nero may well have been a literal fullfillment, that does not rule out other fullfullments (spiritual, moral, or otherwise) of that verse. The Church does teach that there will be an anti-christ. I'll just leave it at that. Edited May 5, 2005 by thessalonian

philothea
My trouble with the ID chip or (as I've also heard) a credit card/cashless society interpretation, is that anyone who accepts the mark is punished.
Rev 14:9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice, "Anyone who worships the beast or its image, or accepts its mark on forehead or hand, will also drink the wine of God's fury, poured in full strength into the cup of his wrath, and will be tormented in burning sulfur before the holy angels and before the Lamb."
Bad stuff. I think this mark would have to constitute some kind of actual blasphemy. A credit card or an ID chip is not that evil! Thy Geekdom Come
I suppose we could also take microchips as the mark given to true believers, if we really wanted to.
Theoketos
Thess, I agree that there will be an Anti Christ, though I think people who associate themselves with conspiracies based on private interpritations of relvelation involving such things are not stable theologians. P.S. Butter on eggs is gross.
yomichael
this is off subject but kind of cool! In John 6:66 all the people leave the Body of Christ. 666 the devil leads them away.
thessalonian
Thess, I agree that there will be an Anti Christ, though I think people who associate themselves with conspiracies based on private interpritations of relvelation involving such things are not stable theologians. P.S. Butter on eggs is gross.
While I agree that the pre-trib rapture, pope is the anti-christ, and I'm going to avoid all the suffering of the tribulatoin as my car slams in to the cars around it on the freeway because the driver has been raptured people are nutz, I also think we need to be careful. Someone above said that chips and credit cards aren't evil (something I might debate, seeing how I have used them in the past. ). Not in themselves. Neither is TV or computers or the interent (which my wife and I argue about a bit). Yet those who are evil can use them for evil purposes. It would not be at all surprizing to see an anti-christ use a technology such as a chip to keep tabs on people. In fact I would expect him to in some way use the most up to date technology in his quest for control of the hearts of men. Is that it. I don't know and lean toward doudting it. Though I have seen it speculated from Catholic seers as well. Not that there can't be a few bags of squirrel food in our midst either. I would just urge caution in getting too much of a belly giggle out of pooh pooh all of this. Creem and eggs with a little rum ain't bad. Bad stuff. I think this mark would have to constitute some kind of actual blasphemy. A credit card or an ID chip is not that evil!
Read my post above. I agree credit cards in and of themselves are not evil. Yet, they could be used for evil purposes and I would expect and anti-christ figure to use the latest technology available. At one time telephone numbers were the mark of the beast and fundies were afraid of them. Then social security numbers. Now the chip so it does get a little nutty, but we must be careful in still being open to the possibility that there may eventually be a wolf and he will use technology for evil. I'm not saying that is chips or whatever. Just excercising a bit of caution. More detail in my reply to theoketos. One more thing. Throughout the ages there has always been some thread of truth in the thinking of those outside the Church. Paul even quotes a sage in Acts 17. "In him we live and move and have our being". Can't remember who it was that said it. Aristotle? So while their predictions will be off we must be careful in dismissing them. The three wisemen knew where the Christ Child was when he was in the midst of the Jews who had the scriptures that fortold his coming. Guest T-Bone
Bar codes....bar codes are the Mark of the Beast. (And NCR is the Anti-Christ) (N = 14, 1 + 4 = 5, 5 + 1 (from all the ones in 9-11) = 6; C = 3, 3 X 2 (since it's the second letter in NCR) = 6, or 3 - 2 = 1, if using the greek translation; R = 18, 18 is three 6's)
