phatcatholic
did this person say anything that prompted you to respond that way, other than saying she felt trapped when she went to catholic churches? if that was all she said, i don't know if it warranted the response you gave her. i think sometimes we as catholics are so used to being attacked for what we believe that we see a battle when there really isn't one. also, you said alot of things that, while true, can also become cliches if we throw them around too often. i think you had there an opportunity to be compassionate. i would have started by asking her why she felt trapped and waited on her to reply. when she gave one, then you would know what u had to work with and if there was really a challenge there. also, when a person leaves the church, it is usually over some really strong feelings and some difficult experiences. so, i think the best thing is to not discredit their emotions and what they have to say right away. its important to first show them that you understand why they would feel that way and then gently and patiently show them what the Church is really all about. i hope you are not offended by what i have said here. this is all for the sake of constructive criticism. i hope it helps pax christi, phatcatholic
