Resey
I attend a public catholic highschool. Some of the teachers are amazing catholics..but most are a bit "lacking". My school is just as bad as the public one for drugs, sex and swearing. When I wear Christian clothing to school I get talked trash to. Its almost sad that I cant show my faith in a catholic school without being called "god squad". It doesn't really bother me that much though, it gives me that extra push I need to make school pleasant. I used to always want to be a missionary, I am now realizing that my school is my mission field. The poorest of the poor of my town walk the same halls as I do. Every day I spend in that place is just one more opportunity to improve the lives of my peers. Edited June 20, 2007 by Resey

jeffpugh
I graduated from a Catholic high school. In Canada, at least Ontario, it's mixed. But basically, it's not as Catholic as it should be. We don't have a priest for a chaplain, we have a woman who fills the roll (inadequately). Long story short, I have fought a lot of battles there... and many of them I had to walk away from because I did not have the support from my peers. One example would be singing sacred music for the mass instead of pop and hippy garbage.
Romans1513
When I was at my Catholic high school, I loved it. In terms of being seen as weird for being "too religious", thats what I thought the thread was originally about, yes, it was hard sometimes. And I probably didn't stand up for it like I should have. But, on the other hand, I went to a public grade school and just being ABLE to talk about faith in class is something you all should be thankful for. In terms of "liberalness/orthodoxy", if I went there now, I probably wouldn't have liked it so much- guitars, gospel choir, etc. during Mass, a senior religion teacher who was pretty liberal, etc. But my faith has changed a lot since then. Hirsap
Realise this thread is getting a bit old, but hey... I go to a Catholic (single sex boys) school. Sadly, not many students seem to be practising (though you can never be sure). To answer the question, is it hard to be Catholic...I say most definately yes. It's hard enough have to defend the respect due to the faith amongst peers...but the battle goes on to teachers failing in their job. I mean, openly admitting one's drunken state on the weekend, not knowing the basics of the grave nature of Church disciplinary laws (ie.: the grave nature of obeying fasting regulations) presenting anti-Catholic viewpoints as valid (i.e.: structure of the family), discussing new-agey stuff...what can i say. Personally I find it very difficult discerning the best way to deal with questionable incidents. Any perspective on this will be much appreciated. But still you do get SOME, who are faithful. Lioness For Christ
Grrr... It can be rather hard, yes. We did have weekly Mass which was awsome. Did we even have it twice a week sometimes? And confession was very available... BUT It seems to be a trend for kids to be very nasty in Catholic schools... My siblings and I were all picked on and I have friends who had the same trouble from other Catholic schools. (We found people to be nicer in PUBLIC school! ) Not all of the teachings were correct and there were more than a few times when my siblings and I came home with questions to our parents to get it clarified... So in some matters, our parents had to re-teach us. The Notre Dame textbook in HS was horrible.... I didn't like what we had to read in English class too... Some may laugh, but I didn't (and my mom didn't) find "To Kill a Mockingbird" a very plesant experiance... I mean, come ON--there ARE better things to read, and the class above me was reading "The Scarlet Letter"... Again, you may laugh, but the next year when I went to Public school I was NOT reading that book with my class. Then the students again.. Some were probably confused--once I was insisting abortion WAS killing babies while someone was saying it wasn't. People were mad at me for trying to ask them to not say God's name in vain, and once some kids put a sticker on my locker saying it was promoting the devil or something... Believe me, the last year I was there there was NO RESPECT for our religion teacher... People made up "prayer intetnitons" to waste time, something was stolen, and there was no interest. Then a video taht was really horrible was shown in a socialiogy class and when the principal heard about it even HE was upset. So... I didn't miss leaving that place. curtins
I go to a Diocesan Catholic high school. I would say that yes it is hard. The majority of the student body, not to be judgemental, but rather from observation and experience, is just like any other high school kid, not too concerned about their faith or with God. Theres a lot of drinking in my school and I think a lot of drugs as well. We do have a Spiritual Life Commission, which is being re-vamped this year, so it remains to be seen what it'll be like (in the 2 years I've been in the school, they haven't been doing much). We have a yearly mission trip which is good. Daily mass, which I don't think anyone goes to. We have a chapel which I gladly take advantage of for morning prayer before classes start. We're getting a new chaplain this year I think. In the past, there hasn't been much adoration or confessions, I'm hoping to get that changed this year with the new chaplain. The religion classes are orthodox, but not very good in terms of getting kids interested, engaged, involved with the faith etc. There are no advanced religion classes. I'm known as a Jesus freak, so people either respect that or don't mess with me, but its still not easy to live out your faith. Lets put it this way, I'm not surrounded by opus dei. however, I do have a good group of freinds who are generally good kids who are involved in the various service and spiritual activies via spiritual life. So there is that group of kids who do care about their faith, but we are deffinatly out numbered by those who don't. But all in all, I like my school. Sure things could be better, but thats where people like me come in to advocate for change and make them better.
Vincent Vega
I'd die to go to a Catholic High School. It's very hard to be Catholic in public school any more. For instance: my friend goes to Bishop Kenny High in Duval county. They have a Vincentian society there! I am a huge fan of St. Vincent, and the hospital that my dad works at and I volunteer at is in his namesake. But, due to all of the red tape incurred by the anti-religious sentiments with the government and the separation of church and state overdramatization, the school board would never allow a chapter to be added at my school. So, even though I got to a public school, I say It would be easier to be Catholic at a Catholic school. In Christ, Mitch
Fixxxer
Like i said nearly two years ago in this thread, St thomas is fine with me and still is. I still don't find it hard at all to be catholic at my school.
salterrae
I go to a private Catholic school. Even though about 99% of the students are so-called "Catholics," it is still pretty easy for me to be Catholic. In fact, in a way, it's kind of good that there are so many non-practising Catholics at my school; this way I get the chance to put my faith into practice (and the hallways are empty after school since no one stays to pray, so I get the chapel to myself. ) We have non-required daily Mass, which I attend every day, required monthly Mass (unfortunately in our gym; my school is only 10 years old now and still growing), weekly Eucharistic Adoration/Benediciton, a Priest for a supervising principal, and one almost-full-time chaplain. We have 4 Carmelite Sisters from Alhambra and 3 Daughters of Mary Sisters (I'm not certain, but I believe that's what their community is called) from Nigeria. We are really blessed. Yggi
Ok, looking at lifeteenchick257's poll got me wondering. How is it for Catholic kids going to Catholic Highschool. I know some people responded on her thread with Catholic HS stuff. I was wondering if anyone has had a really good experience with Catholic High School. As in it was actually Catholic, unlike my school...
If I were to go back to school, I would choose Catholic School. My faith was nurtured by the nuns and they teach you how to behave and respect especially the values of human life.
