Didacus
Went to a Catholic high school throughout my 'highschool' career if you can call it that. To summarize the atmosphere there: One of my teachers, a brother, asked the question once to the class, to raise their hands if they had gone to sunday Mass. I was one of the only ones to raise my hand, and those who did where shy about it. the teacher noted that twenty years ago, had the same question been asked, few would not have raised their hands, and they who did not raised their hands would have been shy about it. It was though being a Catholic in a Catholic high school (mine anyways), especially if you even remotely practised your faith. University was even worse... LiL Kat Said
I think Sometimes it's easy to be Catholic in a Catholic High School ( i go to St. Agnes, all girls catholic school) and most of the girls there judge me and kinda know that i'm the "Jesus Freak" person haha but i think some of them also respect it. I can show them that i'm a crazy fun person too. ONe thing i love about it though is that whenever i have a question i can ask my Theology teacher and have an awesome discussion with any of my catholic teachers. It's like something to bond over THis year i tried out and made the CMT (Campus Ministry Team) and i'm really excited, I'm trying to think of new things to start at the school to get more kids excited about God and such...any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated : Kathleen

MissScripture
Aww...sounds like your schools having a bit of a rough time. Perhaps if they had mass during school it would be more conducive. At my school, we had weekly mass. A priest from the community would celebrate and it was mandatory for everyone to attend. I think this was very good- though many of the students groaned b/c they had to go. Also, towards the end of the school year, we started having weekly adoration. Ahh, it was wonderful. It is sooo important for the students to have that spiritual influence in school.
Yeah, it seems the religion teachers think that Catholicism isn't appealing to youth and needs to have some "minor" changes to be made acceptable...of course they don't even give it a chance. I wish they would let the power of the Holy Spirit work, instead of being counterproductive. Oh, we did have mandatory Mass once a month starting in my 3rd year there. During my 1st and 2nd years, there were 4 mandatory Masses each year. But I've sort of stirred things up...I wrote a letter to the Bishop and I've gotten my priest involved and now he says that if things don't start changing, there is going to be hell to pay...(and I guess that could be taken quite literally!) Pray that my friends and sister who are still going through this system don't need to suffer!
EcceNovaFacioOmni
My school's Masses are OK. We have a lot of liberals that run the show around here though. Our religion texts are a little odd (St. Mary's Press) and the teachers go to the extreme in making sure that they don't want to offend the 2% of the school that's non-Catholic. MissScripture
Whoa, sounds like my school to a tee! I've never understood that trying to be non-offensive thing...didn't they know it was a Catholic school when they came? And what if I'm offended by their watering down of the Catholic Church? [Sarcasm]Oh, that's right, I'm right, but I can't do anything about it! [/Sarcasm] That was the actual response I got from one of the people in charge. How ...uplifting? geetarplayer
At first, a lot of my peers made it a point to criticize me for my faith, but they grew to accept it, and I think they even respect it now. As for the teachers... the only religion teacher I have a difficult time with is my religion teacher this year. She's supposed to be teaching Christian Justice, but we haven't actually learned anything yet. She talks to us like we're fourth graders, and she teaches us the most ambiguous, watered-down theology ever. Other than that, we have Mass every month, confession once a semester, and one retreat per class per year. -Mark
LiL Kat Said
that's awesome that your school offers confession!!! and mass once a month! my school has obligatory mass with the whole school every couple months or so.... acctually there is mass everytuesday sometimes started by the CMT (campus ministry team - which i made! yay!!!!) it hasn't started yet though, we get one of the priests from Strake Jesuit (the all boys school next to us) to come over and say mass. Sometimes they offer confession after mass. I'm keeping you all and your schools in my prayers!! Mucho Love Kathleen
