Mel Gibson offered role in Pope's visit
By Linda Morris
August 6, 2005

Mel Gibson will be asked to re-create the final journey of Christ in the
streets of Sydney if the Pope visits here in 2008.

Gibson's staging the Stations of the Cross is part of Sydney's pitch for
Catholicism's World Youth Day, which a leading Vatican observer claims
has already been secretly awarded to the city.

According to bid documents sent to the Vatican and obtained by the
Herald, Gibson would be asked to create the Stations of the Cross as he
did in his film The Passion of the Christ.

The stations would begin with the Last Supper, probably at the Opera
House at sunset, and end with the Crucifixion at St Mary's Cathedral.

The Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, has confirmed that
intermediaries had "started approaches" to Gibson to stage Christ's
journey if Sydney is named as the next Youth Day host city.

Gibson's involvement was "something on our wish list", Cardinal Pell
said, and not yet definite. "He might well be attracted. I think his
devotion to Christ is very real."

Pope Benedict will announce the Youth Day city for 2008 on August 21, in
Cologne.

The bid document does not say how much the event would cost, but rumours
of at least $80 million have prompted disquiet in some sections of the
church that its contribution - thought to be about a third - could be
better spent elsewhere.

The Sydney Diocese has offered to subsidise accommodation, transport and
meals for young people from poor or war-torn countries.

The bid document says Youth Day in Sydney would bring more young people
to church and more men into the priesthood, and precipitate a new
evangelism in Australia and Oceania.

On the day after the Stations of the Cross, pilgrims would walk 20
kilometres from the North Sydney shrine of Mary MacKillop across five
bridges, including the Harbour Bridge, to Olympic Park. There on the
next day, a Sunday, the Pope would celebrate Mass.

The NSW Minister for Tourism, Sandra Nori, says that apart from the
obvious economic spin-offs for Sydney, the event would invigorate
Australia's religious life.

Mel Gibson Says "No!" to Pope
TRADITIO had reported earlier that Newchurch was trying to wrangle actor-director Mel Gibson, an outspoken anti-Newchurch traditional Catholic, into "producing" a Stations of the Cross extravaganza through the streets of Sydney, Australia, for the next papal World Youth Day in 2008.

Apparently, Gibson is as disgusted at these "Catholic Woodstocks" as TRADITIO is. The Sydney Extra television show contacted Gibson's representative about the reports. The representative had only two words about whether Gibson had agreed to appear and direct the Stations of the Cross for Benedict: "Absolutely not."

Our Australian correspondent confirmed that Gibson's name was merely being used to elevate the standing of George Cardinal Pell of Sydney with the people and to help him in his attempt to get WYD for Australia. And this is supposed to be a "conservative" cardinal behind staging the 2008 edition of this papal abomination! Newchurch is all smoke and mirrors, folks.
I do not agree with this article in anyway

this is purley for the information

god bless,

sam
