theculturewarrior
When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. The heathens themselves said: "What marvels the Lord worked for them!". What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad. Deliver us O Lord, from our bondage as streams in dry land. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, they go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing: they come back, they come back full of song, carrying their sheaves. Sojourner
I grew up in a church where we only sang psalms, and only a cappella. Some of the settings were really beautiful, and I find at times that I really miss that. The gift that church gave me was the psalms set to music. I know many of them because we sang them so often. Sometimes one will randomly pop into my head, which is actually kind of cool. But picking one ... I'll list my top six, in no particular order, along with some of my favorite verses from each: Psalm 84 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 139 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 51 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 22 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed. Psalm 133 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

MC IMaGiNaZUN
those are all beautiful Psalms. But what about Psalm 122: Psalms Chapter 121 Note Laetatus sum in his. Note The desire and hope of the just for the coming of the kingdom of God, and the peace of his church. 121:1 A gradual canticle. Note I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: We shall go into the house of the Lord. 121:2 Our feet were standing in thy courts, O Jerusalem. 121:3 Jerusalem, which is built as a city, which is compact together. 121:4 For thither did the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: the testimony of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord. 121:5 Because their seats have sat in judgment, seats upon the house of David. 121:6 Pray ye for the things that are for the peace of Jerusalem: and abundance for them that love thee. 121:7 Let peace be in thy strength: and abundance in thy towers. 121:8 For the sake of my brethren, and of my neighbours, I spoke peace of thee. 121:9 Because of the house of the Lord our God, I have sought good things for thee. argent_paladin
Sorry skywakka, but Psalm 95 has negative connotations for me. It is the first psalm (invitatory) of the day for the Liturgy of the Hours, so I was usually half asleep, mumbling it at 6:30 in the morning in choir. But I love Psalm 130, because we said it every day before dinner! 2 Out of the depths I call to you, LORD; 2 Lord, hear my cry! May your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. 3 If you, LORD, mark our sins, Lord, who can stand? 4 3 But with you is forgiveness and so you are revered. 5 I wait with longing for the LORD, my soul waits for his word. 6 My soul looks for the Lord more than sentinels for daybreak. More than sentinels for daybreak, 7 let Israel look for the LORD, For with the LORD is kindness, with him is full redemption, 8 And God will redeem Israel from all their sins. It is also sung at compline and it is beautiful. I also like Psalm 31, and so did Jesus! In you, LORD, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice deliver me; 3 incline your ear to me; make haste to rescue me! Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to save me. 4 You are my rock and my fortress; for your name's sake lead and guide me. 5 Free me from the net they have set for me, for you are my refuge. 6 2 Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, LORD, faithful God.
