Lounge Daddy
i was listening to the radio this morning and there was some discussion of how 9/11 quietly came and went... they played an audio at the end of the program (HERE)...i became so choked up i had to turn the volume off and leave the room... it just brought everything back, exactly how i felt that day... one the very few times in my life that i really wept - and i wept again listening to this... i had to go into the bathroom and shut the door because i didnt want my kids to see
Birgitta Noel
I've never heard that audio from the air traffic controllers. Wow. There are truly no words. Our dear friends lost their son-in-law that day. He was on the 105th floor working at Cantor Fitzgerald. Later that year his wife learned that she was pregnant. Brother Adam
And they wonder why we need a re-education of the understanding of the dignity of the human person. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them...And God saw everthing that he had made, and behold, it was very good." Edited September 13, 2005 by Brother Adam

Birgitta Noel
oh..... oh my.... and what now? how are they? how is the child and mother?
My mom called me at work after it happened and said, "Michael, MIchael works in the WTC. They haven't heard from him." It was awful for them, her parents drove up from Florida, left that day, and they looked for him, thought they had found him at one point in a hospital, there was a man who said his name was Micahel, he had dark hair, but it wasn't him. Then things started coming out about how no one over the 103rd (?) floor really got out and they knew. I don't think they got a last phone call or anything. I'm not sure if that's better or worse. I don't know what I'd want. The chance to say goodbye, or the agony of having to? Imagine those who came home to answering machine messages?! I simply cannot understand how one bears something like that other than in the arms of Christ. I went to get her a card at Hallmark and I stood there in front of the rack of cards and was reduced to tears. How do you pick out an appropriate card? There was no "sorry your husband was killed by terrorists" card. Seriously, I just lost it. I don't think I ever sent the card I did buy. I didn't know what to say. The only thing I heard that I ever thought was appropriate was from Sidney Callahan at a conference at Notre Dame that October, she was reflecting on those she'd lost and said "Love is stronger than death." Yup, that's it. That's all that can be said. Now, four years later things are better, though I can't imagine how you explain all of this to your children, she had a younger daughter (who was 3 or 4 at the time I think). The little girl that had been conceived (which was a long road!), Christina, has down's syndrome, but the family is doing very well, and her older sister adores her. In fact, the mom just remarried, and in addition to her two girls her new husband has a few children of his own. He was an old friend from way back I guess and he looked her up after 9-11 if I'm remembering correctly. God works in mysterious ways. We also lost an alumnae from my College. She was waiting for an elevator and told others to go on before her as she was single, just her and her horses. I cannot imagine the courage and self sacrifice that would take! Her father said soon after, "we know she died before the tower fell, her friends confirmed they saw her." I assume she died of inhalation or something like that. There are no words. I'm a military brat, grew up in a world where my father wore a bullet proof vest when we lived in Greece because of an active terrorist group there (which was just broken up a year or so ago). I flew to DC on Sept 20, 2001 and before I left my father called and said, "If anything happens on that plane you know what to do." Before 9/11 that meant, you do what ever the terrorists say. Post 9/11 I knew exactly what my father meant. There was no doubt in my mind. On 9/11 when I called him just after the second plane hit and said, "What's happening?" he didn't even hesitate, "We're at war." The question I had always posed to my students pre-9/11 in our study of American Culture when we talked about genocide, war, etc. was "what makes you think that you're so special? What makes you think this can't happen to you?" 9/11 united us with the world in a horrible terrible solidarity. We will never forget, ever. If we do we loose the right to call ourselves Americans.
