zunshynn
My mormon friend doesn't understand why it has to be bread and wine that is consecrated... because if it's so important, what if there is no bread available or something. I explained that we had to follow the form Jesus gave us, but then she was like, well then why do say baptism does not have to be by immersion? She was saying how they believe that it's the blessing that's important, and if like, there is no wine or bread, then people should be able to use something else. And I explained that if circumstances made it impossible to recieve the Eucharist, God would still bless their desire to recieve it. And I said, well if it doesn't matter, than why does it have to be something that you eat? Or what if there's no priest, why then would Mormons not let someone else. But that didn't seem sufficient for her... help?
thessalonian
Bread has been a staple of mankind since the very earliest of days. It has been a source of nutrition for the body from the earliest of days, and even more in the past than today has been the staple of mankind. It is the most appropriate symbol for the food that is above all food, the food for the soul. Bread is also important in that the grains become crushed as we are crushed and molded together in to one loaf as we are molded in to one body. Her comparison with immersion vs. pouring is more like the comparison between leaven and unleaven bread. Baptism could not be done without water. That is the more appropriate comparision. Beyond that she needs to submit to the 2000 years of the wisdom of the Church in such matters, acknowledging that there is much that she simply does not understand about the depth and beauty of the sacrament, of which I only brushed the surface in this post. It can only be bread and not wonder bread primarily because that is what the Church and the scriptures say it must be. Does she believe in the real prescence? thessalonian
For some funny reason I read it "my mom doesn't believe...it has to be bread". Most of my commentary still applies. The Lord's Supper is cheapened by the symbolism only mentality of non-catholics. God makes what was mearly symbols in the Old Testament give life in the New. He transforms the bread in to himself and feeds mankind with the bread from heaven. Not the crackers from heaven or the chocklate chip cookies from heaven but BREAD from heaven. He fed the 5000 with bread! Edited October 20, 2005 by thessalonian
