tojo
I really should have done it at the Rite od Election/Call to Conynuing Conversion, that would've been cool, but it didn't occur to me...
cappie
In the "old" days The reason you kissed the ring of a Bishop was because of the relic set inside the ring. Pope Paul XVI changed that by presenting all the Bishops of the Second Vatican Council with a gold band. Most of the bishops took the lead and hence most bishops today have a gold band although I have seen some rather elaborate rings making a comeback. It was traditional to kiss the ring of Abbot as well as an Abbess, she did not wear the Mitre but is invested with Crozier,Pectoral Cross and ring Edited December 30, 2005 by cappie
crazymaine catholic
i kissed our bishop's ring, and a couple of my friends joined in, actually, luthien and moosey were there i think, and he told us to stop. i think we embarrassed him. : i remember going for it one time, and he had forgot to put back on after doing dishes or something. whoops! :
Lilllabettt
I met a bishop, once, and I would have liked to kiss his ring. He's not the type, though, and I didn't want to make him uncomfortable.
TheOliverOrder88
Yep... Funny story or sorta funny I dunno. Well, I was serving for Archbishope Burke and he came to the servers to greet us. I kissed his ring and he gave a grin, only it was not a regular grin...sorta like a "what-were-you-doing/do-you-know-what-your-doing?" grin. Anyway, afterwards he shrugged his shoulders and laughed like a child. I guess the cape he was wearing made it look really strange.
AlterDominicus
Hahaha...its been my dream to kiss the ring or hand upon that of a Mother Superior! But that hasnt happened yet! I have though kissed the "hand" of Father David when the boys were leaving the vocations camp when us girls got there for our camp! If I could do anything I would LOVE TO BRING BACK that tradition of kissing the ring upon Mother Superior, priests and so on!

Eh I'm not so big on kissing some priests hand. They're supposed to be more of a ground-level position. Bishops and Cardinals, and of course the Pope I have no problem with...in fact I think it should be enforced.
catholicinsd
Do you kissers also genuflect on the left knee as you kiss? There's a Benedictine Monastary here, they have a Prioress, called Sister, not Mother, who is elected to a fixed term. Would it be correct to kiss her ring? What about the former Prioresses? Thomas Marian
I don't think a full genuflection is necessary (correct me if I'm wrong). Just remember, DO NOT BRING UP THE BISHOP'S HAND TO MEET YOUR LIPS!! Go down and bring your lips to his ring. By the way, a natural way to go for the ring kiss is to pretend to go to shake his hand, and once you have his hand, go down and venerate away. Sneaky. And yes, I believe left knee down is proper. EAnn246
I never kissed the ring of my former Bishop. He was more of a handshake/hugged everyone kind of guy. My family was kind of friend with him because my dad worked for him. We don't have a Bishop right now because our old one left for another Diocese last April and we haven't got a new one yet. Thomas Marian
I know what it's like to be bishop-less. After Bishop Sam Jacobs left, it took a while to get Bishop Herzog at the steering wheel.
heyyoimjohnny
last time I kissed his ring, the next 3 guys to shake his hand did, so he shouted, "no need for that! we'll be here all night!" so I probably won't do it very often.
